A reader sent a note on Sunday asking about Bolivar, since we discussed Galveston area fishing spots and did not mention anything about the Bolivar Peninsula.

Bolivar has its share of spring breakers and, like those on Galveston Island, many are interested in trying their luck at fishing. While there may be a lack of large public fishing piers or party boat operations on the peninsula, Bolivar does offer some outstanding fishing.

Anglers interested in hiring a guide to fish East Bay should check with Stingaree Marina in Crystal Beach or the Bolivar Yacht Basin Bait Camp. Both should have recommendations for professional guides to host trips on East Bay and other areas nearby.

One of the most popular spots along the upper Texas coast to fish from the bank (or land) is Rollover Pass at Gilchrist, just a few miles east of Crystal Beach. Trout, reds, flounder and just about all pan fish make their way through the pass at one time or another.

The vast and pristine surf along the peninsula offers some of the best surf fishing found anywhere along the Texas Coast.

Just a short distance from the Bolivar Side Ferry Landing is the entry to the North Jetty, where anglers in good physical shape can walk the rocks and fish both the channel and bay sides. The North Jetty Bait Camp is located near the beginning of the jetty and offers bait and refreshments when open.

Also an easy run from the ferry landing is the Bolivar Pocket on the channel side and Horseshoe Lake on the Bay side. Depending on wind direction, both can be very productive and are options for kayakers.

Some say that Bolivar is a well kept secret for excellent fishing year-round.
