Registration is underway for the Galveston Island Tennis League, which begins with singles play at Menard Park’s Scoggins-Stiglich Courts on March 20.

The doubles league will follow on March 21.

Both of the springtime eight-week leagues, which end on May 8-9, are open to the first 12 and 24 players to register, respectively.

Mikenzy Dubrow, a member of Team Galveston, the City of Galveston Parks and Recreation Department’s summer junior tennis program, has been named to the Biloxi, Miss., High School varsity tennis team as an eighth-grader.

Dubrow, 14, plays both the girls doubles and mixed doubles for Biloxi High as a starter.

The Mississippi High School Activities Association, the official sanctioning body of all public and some private junior high and high school academic and athletic competitions in the state, allows eighth-graders to compete at the high school level.

The daughter of Galveston’s Jeff Dubrow attends Biloxi Junior High School.


Bay Area Christian School’s Brady Bergvall was a two-time winner in the Broncos’ recent district tennis match with Logos Preparatory Academy.

Bergvall won both of his pro-set matches by identical 8-0 scores.


Tennis Express in Houston is playing host to Wilson Sporting Goods’ Clash Revolution Tour van on Friday (4-7 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.).

Every high school player that attends the Wilson Clash racquet series demo will receive a free set of Luxilon racquet strings and be eligible for other giveaways.

Baylor University is hosting three tennis camps in Waco during the month of June.

The sessions, for ages 8-18, are scheduled for June 2-6, 9-13 and 16-20.

In singles, hit your approach shot towards your opponent’s weak side, which usually is their backhand.

That gives you fewer chances of being passed.
