Michael Leger scored a perfect 18 in Week 6 of action of the Galveston Island Thursday Night Tennis League, played at Menard Park’s Scoggins-Stiglich Courts.

Joining Leger in the winners circle were Frank Mencacci and league founder-coordinator Beep Sullivan with identical 17s and Tony Liles with a 16.

Court assignments for Week 7 are as follows: No. 1 — Liz Castillo, Jeff Dubrow, Lawrence Weiser and Mencacci; No. 2 — Dominic Etienne, Juan Barney, Steve Cunningham and Brandon Locklin; No. 3 — Heidi Harrison, Ann Reiser, Tammy Hunt and Leger.

Also, No. 4 — MaryLou Dallas, Jacque Creswell, Adrienne Skiles and Sullivan; No. 5 — Becky Cunningham, Gail Kilgore, Ed Hooven and Liles; and No. 6 — Mike Vashon, Susan Dudek, Dana Magnuson and Maureen Sykora.


Bacliff’s Susan Martin and Liz Burris are competing in the United States Tennis Association National Mother-Daughter, Senior Mother-Daughter & Super Senior Mother-Daughter Hard Court Championships being held at Walden Racquet Club in Montgomery.

Martin and Burris, participating in the super senior division, opened tournament play on Saturday against Teri Eggers of Orange, Calif., and Trina Eggers of Santa Ana, Calif.

The championship match is scheduled for 9 a.m. today.


Friday is the last day to sign up for the 60th annual LeMaster Husband & Wife Tournament in Houston on Nov. 17-19.

Ten events are being offered, including mixed doubles play in the open, 50-, 65- and 75-and-over divisions.

Entry fee is $162.26 per doubles team. There is a one event limit.

Local championship-level juniors have until next Sunday to register for the Bay Area Racquet Club Doubles Only Champ Major Zone tennis tournament, set for Nov. 18-19 in Clear Lake City.

Championship boys and girls 12- through 18-and-under doubles will be played.

Entry fee is $78.40 per doubles team. There is a one event limit.

The 31st annual Beachcomber Tennis Classic is still five months away but already has reached its maximum limit of 32 school entries.

Once again locals taking part will be Texas City, La Marque, Dickinson, Friendswood and city host Ball High.

Like always, the tournament has drawn interest from all parts of the state, including newcomers Denton Braswell, San Marcos, Sulphur Springs and Tyler Robert E. Lee.

Approximately a dozen schools are coming in from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area.

The tournament, co-hosted by the City of Galveston Parks and Recreation Department and Pasadena J. Frank Dobie High School, is scheduled for March 23-24, 2018.
