With the Galveston Marathon just over, local runners are beginning to think about an upcoming long-distance race, the Divas Half Marathon and 5K, scheduled for April 28. To kick things off, Divas race ambassador Trelle Vernon-Cole Dandridge is hosting Divas Night next Thursday, Feb. 28.

Divas Night serves both to familiarize newcomers to the female-centric race, and to bring together veterans of the race for an interesting evening.

“We have lots of fun door prizes, including race entries to Run Like A Diva and Tri Girl, and there will be wine-tasting, and a presentation by Callie Walker on intermittent fasting, carb cycling and fueling efficiently for your race,” Dandridge said.

The event will be held at American Shaman, a recently-opened store owned by Dandridge and her husband, Ryan. The store sells a variety of hemp-derived products.

“We’re seeing lots of athletes coming in to try our CBD products,” she noted. “Cross-fitters, runners, triathletes and others are using them instead of other anti-inflammatory products.”

Divas Night will also offer attendees an opportunity to sample the products.

“Our signature product is a water-soluble tincture, and we also have anti-inflammatory cream and a topical serum,” Dandridge said.

Ryan Dandridge pointed out that CBD products are now completely legal, due to recent federal legislation.

“CBD comes from industrial hemp,” he explained. “The genus of the plant is cannabis, but the species is industrial hemp, so it’s impossible to get high from these products; they’re just used to relieve pain and inflammation.”

Athletes have been early adopters of hemp-based products to ease post-workout aches and aid recovery, and the World Anti-Doping Agency has approved the use of CBD. Definitive research is still incomplete, and the Dandridges stress that they are not medical professionals, just people who have seen improved recovery with CBD.

“At Divas Night, we’ll talk about how CBD can help reduce inflammation,” Ryan Dandridge said. “If you can reduce inflammation, you’re going to feel better.”

Divas Night is scheduled from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 28 at Galveston American Shaman, 4619 Fort Crockett Blvd.
