It’s a sweet, sweet sound when Carole King sings “It’s too late, baby.” For those who remain Houston Texans fans (count me among the faithful), those lyrics describe the 2017 season; and, if you are a Tom Turkey, well then the words are just plumb tragic.
If, on the other hand, you and your favorite team of golfers are looking for a really good way to support community programs, play the fabulous Galveston Country Club golf course and — maybe — take home a very large turkey to make a part of your family Thanksgiving dinner: Mark your calendar!
The Galveston Island Meals on Wheels Thanksgiving Holiday Golf Tournament will be played Monday, Nov. 20 (rain date Nov. 27), with registration at 10:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 12:30 pm. As is customary, there will be a light lunch and a full dinner; also, there will be prizes to be won on all the par 3s, including a new car and a Pebble Beach golf package. To get your group signed up, call Donna Kearney (409-599-1267) or Knute Lund (409-737-9804). Cannot attend? Call and explore sponsorship options.
GIVING THEIR ALL
Ball High Tornado JV boys were in action on Nov. 9 at the Deer Park Fall Classic at Battleground Golf Course. Landon Parsons was low scorer as he and teammates Ian Carroll, Hanson Root and Spencer Petty gained valuable competitive experience to be used at Timber Creek Golf Club in the Nov. 27 Clear Lake Winter Classic.
The Ball High Lady Tors took home a second-place plaque and medals from the Texas City Girls Fall Classic on Nov. 7 at Bayou Golf Club. Reagan Conner won third place individual honors in leading the teammates Taylor Brooks, Elizabeth Donlon, Makenzy Kleinecke and Brooke Hopkins to the runner-up spot in team play.
Barbers Hill, anchored by a sparkling 66 turned in by Jason Bryant, blew away a strong field in the Nov. 6 Galveston Ball Boys Varsity Fall Classic. Friendswood (fifth), Clear Springs (sixth) and Clear Falls (eighth) all made the top 10 in a field of 22 schools, with Austin Williams of Clear Falls (76) and Cameron Johnson (76) tying for sixth place individual honors. Hart Holtzclaw (79) of Friendswood tied for ninth place.
The hosting Tornados finished 14th with low scorer Colin Davidson finishing in the top 40 out of 93 golfers. The Tors are back in action today at the Texas City Fall Classic at Bayou Golf Club.
The Clear Falls Knights finished third out of 25 teams in the Deer Park Fall Classic, led by Christian Hernandez (72) and Preston Holmes (75), who are among the top returning players for 2017-18 along with senior Cristian Polk, junior Mick Foley, junior Austin Williams and sophomore Cameron Curtis.
TAKING IT ALL
An even par 72 was good enough for low gross earnings for Kyle Holmes in last week’s cash game at Moody Gardens Golf Course. Larry Poe, Frank Bohn and Jerry Goen finished win, place and show in the individual net competition; Poe was joined by James Clark and Wally Holmes in winning team low net.
At Bayou Golf Club last week, Clifford Johnson, Mike Reinschmidt, Penny Perez and Newman Sharp scrambled to a 61 and a single-shot win over Marc Napier, Gary Potter, Homer Whittington and Dick Orieweller.
League City’s Mike Standly shot rounds of 71, 75 and 73 for a T-13 finish in the Lone Star NGL Texas Senior Open last week at Eagle Pointe Golf Club.
Tune in next week to find out what’s going on with local standout high school golfer Alex Welch; also, learn how scientific evidence confirms the existence of my latest malady — and might offer a viable solution.
Be safe, on and off the course.
