Seventeen-year-old Rose Zhang, of the United States, defeated defending champion Gabriela Ruffels (Australia) to win the United States Women’s Amateur Golf Championship on Saturday.

Established in 1895, it is the leading amateur event for female golfers. Open to golfers of any age who have a handicap index of 5.4 or less, the tournament attracts thousands of entrants annually, with that number reduced through sectional competition. The field of qualifiers then competes in stroke play for two days; the top 64 players move on to play elimination matches (18 holes), with the final match played at 36 holes.
