At 6-foot-7, 265 pounds, Randy Matson was a veritable man among boys as a student-athlete back in the 1960s.

Born in Kilgore in March 1945, he was the first man to put the shot more than 70 feet; in a one-month period in 1965, he broke the American shot put record three times. (Putting the shot means shouldering and shoving a 16-pound ball of metal in a very specific manner.) He twice broke the world record and won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1968.
