The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled recently against the NCAA and in favor of amateur athletes who desire to profit from promoting their name, image and likeness (NIL). This change became effective on July 1 this year.

It is my opinion that this movement and change will “open a can of worms,” which could very well result in the demise of amateur athletics as we know it today, create team discord and unity issues for the coaches and potential rule violations and penalties for the school athletic programs. Some specific issues and concerns include:

Mr. Johnson's column expresses my feelings exactly. He hits the nail on the head as it is said with these two statements:

1. This movement and change will “open a can of worms,” which could very well result in the demise of amateur athletics as we know it today, create team discord and unity issues for the coaches and potential rule violations and penalties for the school athletic programs; and,

2. The need is for more, not less, emphasis and time spent on earning a degree.

College sports should be one of the avenues available to get educated and with a degree to serve develop your future. Just my thoughts.

These top athletes already get FREE tuition, FREE room and board (housing and meals), books, school supplies, and travel.

Sometimes there are other under -the-table perks involved (think Aggies in Best Little Whorehouse). Coach Roy Segars of LMHS and HHS told me about college athletes finding money in their locker room lockers if they had a good game.

What I'd like to see is those top athletes reimburse the university for this. But that would never happen. They've been pampered since grade school and in the court system as young adults - and after.

How about putting the people in jail who pampered them. Start with the source, not the recipient.

The laws protect the pamperers.

Happy 4th of July Carlos. You and I agree!
