Region III-6A Championship Boys Basketball Playoffs

Dickinson’s Tramon Mark cuts down a piece of the net after he and his teammates defeated Bellaire 70-61 to claim the Region III-6A Championship at the Berry Center in Cypress on Saturday. The Gators will advance to the state tournament in San Antonio.

Since my start at The Daily News in the spring of 2014, I’ve now seen six major Galveston County high school sports teams make it to state, and when the Dickinson Gators boys basketball team punched their ticket this past Saturday at the Berry Center, it was just as much a thrill for this local sports writer as it was to see the first team I followed make state.

Each of the six state teams over those years was unique in their own way. In Dickinson’s case, the expectations all season long may have been the highest and most pressure-packed, as the Gators team featured a trio of immensely talented senior guards — Tramon Mark, Marcus Williams and Deuce Guidry — and a No. 4 Class 6A state ranking in the preseason polls.
