On Friday, the NFL’s Washington Redskins franchise announced it would “undergo a thorough review of the team’s name,” which has for so long been offensive to so many — particularly the Native American community.

The franchise — which played its first season in 1932 as the Boston Braves, changed its name to the Redskins the following season and moved to Washington, D.C., in 1937 — has for decades resisted calls to change its mascot.

I have always been a fan of the team but, I love your Red Cloud moniker. It would honor a great military leader who represented more than one tribe of Native Peoples. You need to get that idea some legs with the owners!

It would be great. Fans could dress up with feather headdresses and war paint. Maybe get some tomahawks. And just think of the mascot opportunities!

"Fans could dress up with feather headdresses and war paint." Been there done that - but not for Washington.

as a lifelong cowboys fan I hope they hold strong and keep their mname, it wwas meant a symbol of respect. you dont name your team after something you disrespect.

now if you really want to make it less offensive they should change it to the American Redskins, now the offensive part is removed. (copied that from online but it is the most sensible thing ive read about the whole situation

Unbelievable!! What’s next? No NFL football in my house anymore anyway.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. We've heard that our whole life but have we become so thin skinned that many folks are offended by a football mascot? Just as when the N-word was banned from ever being uttered ever again (well except for the repeated times it is present in lyrics by black arteests) this name change will not make one bit of difference to anyone. It's merely a distraction, talking points with no real change behind it. The name will change but that's all.
