A former mayoral candidate, a short-term rental advocate and a public school teacher are the candidates vying to fill Galveston’s vacant council seat in a special election in August.

Wednesday was the deadline for District 1 residents to file for a place on the ballot for a special election to replace council member E.R. Johnson, who died in April.
