"The Constitution says no to DC statehood"

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/elections-2020/the-constitution-says-no-to-dc-statehood/ar-BB15MkiW

"Article I, Section 8 provides explicitly for a national capital that would not be part of a state nor treated as a state, but rather a unique enclave under the exclusive authority of Congress — a neutral 'district' in which representatives of all the states could meet on an equal footing to conduct the nation’s business."

Can Washington DC be legally made into a state? Only if they first pass an amendment authorizing it.

Gary Miller

Carlos> Democrats know making DC a state would violate the Constitution. That would be one of the reasons they will try to do it. They violate the constitution every chance they get.

Charles Douglas

Ms. Fondling, I heard when they get DC statehood they will seek to get the same for Pueto Rico too! All this is part of the LEFT'S scheme to obtain permanent power, and a one party political system in America! Can't but one thing come from such a move, and we all know what that is! Wake up America!

Minorities here ought to be especially appalled at these moves! If not, they should contact the minorities in other countries with a ONE PARTY RULE! Try China first! [wink]

The fact of granting the District of Columbia, statehood, would in all probability, add two additional Democratic Senators to the Senate This fact alone sets up a roadblock by Republicans. However, 'taxation without representation" is a reality for those living in the District of Columbia.

Carlos Ponce

The Constitution is the ONLY roadblock Dwight.

Gary Scoggin

Actually, it’s the politics behind amending the Constitution that’s the roadblock. But that’s okay. Amending the Constitution is, and should be, very hard to do.

Bailey Jones

I favor the admittance of DC (and Puerto Rico). In my understanding of history, creating a separate capital district was to keep any particular state from exercising coercive control over the capital (you might remember Bridge-Gate) and from claiming special rights or privileges for being the state with the capital. If it takes a constitutional amendment, so be it. Disenfranchising 700,000 Americans in DC (or 3,000,000 Americans in Puerto Rico) is anti-American, anti-democratic, and completely unnecessary. (And in the case of PR, an unsavory relic of our history of Imperialism.)

As far as the politics - if the goal of the Republican Party is to truly become the party of all Americans - (I freely admit that I have no idea what the goal of the Republican Party is) - recognizing the rights of people of color in DC and PR would certainly further that goal.

52 is a nice number of states - 7 alternating 7 and 8-star rows makes an attractive flag - more symmetrical than the current version (8 alternating 5 and 6-star rows.)

Gary Miller

Gary S.> There has been no talk of amending the Constitution. They'll just do it and challenge Republicans to undo it. PR is different. It is legal if PR and congress vote for it.

Dwight Burns

And now is the time for this living document to be amended. After all, this is what the founding fathers had the foresight to understand.

Carlos Ponce

The votes to amend the Constitution are not there. Why? As the MSN article writes the writers of the Constitution wanted to create a neutral district.

"In The Federalist No. 43, James Madison explained the need for a "federal district," subject to Congress's exclusive jurisdiction and separate from the territory, and authority, of any single state:

'The indispensable necessity of compleat authority at the seat of Government carries its own evidence with it. It is a power exercised by every Legislature of the Union, I might say of the world, by virtue of its general supremacy. Without it, not only the public authority might be insulted and its proceedings be interrupted, with impunity; but a dependence of the members of the general Government, on the State comprehending the seat of the Government for protection in the exercise of their duty, might bring on the national councils an imputation of awe or influence, equally dishonorable to the Government, and dissatisfactory to the other members of the confederacy.' Dwight Burns

No, because of people such as yourself who continue to stand in the way of progress. Holding on to the idea of minority rule will go by the wayside eventually. You and I will probably be long gone from this earth BY then, However, I want to stand on the right side of History.

"Let freedom ring".

Carlos Ponce

Like in the word "Progressives" you have formed your own definition of "progress".

Gary Miller

Dwight> Lets trade. Make DC a state and repeal the 17th Amendment.

Bailey Jones

Here's a well written 30-page essay on the history of voting rights in DC:

Regarding the debate over DC statehood, rather than make DC a state, why not just give their residents voting rights in Maryland or Virginia? If the issue is truly about taxation without representation, etc., then this solves that. If the issue is about changing the political dynamic by adding two Senators and a Representative from a new, naturally Democratic state, then its proponents should just admit that.

Bailey Jones

That works fine if you cede the land as well. Will Maryland or Virginia be providing services to DC? Building roads, licensing barbers, running the schools, etc? The political dynamic is that DC wants to be its own thing, and be governed by its own elected representatives, and have the same influence in congress as everyone else. I can't think of a convincing reason why Wyoming deserves to be a state but DC doesn't.

If Republicans don't want people in DC to vote, for fear that they will vote Democratic, they should just admit that, and stop with all this "it's in the constitution" nonsense.

Gary Miller

GaryS.>Are you aware that under the original wording of the Constitution before the 17 amendment the US Senate would be 62 to 38 Republican. Passage of the 17th Amendment violated the Constitution. Senators were intended to be the voice of the states, with the house the voice of the people.

Gary Scoggin

By definition, an amendment to the Constitution does not violate the Constitution.

George Laiacona

The residents of the city of Washington DC all 747,000 deserve to be represented in Congress. The Republicans managed to bring in four states back in 1890 in order to pack the Senate with eight more Senators. Now they are very much against bringing in another state that would bring in two more Democrat Senators. The push for power is very much part of the Republicans agenda, along with voter suppression. Washington DC city has more American citizens than the states of Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota together. But the Republicans surely don’t want two more Democrats in the Senate they presently control.

Gary Scoggin

Nobody that voted to make Wyoming, North Dakota or South Dakota states are still alive, much less in Congress. (Except perhaps Diane Feinstein, I need to check.) So whatever the motivations may have been then is moot today. We have to make today's decisions on today's facts. And the fact is that there are places where US citizens live where, due to the peculiars of their residence, they are not entitled to vote.

If we extend voting to Washington DC, shouldn't we also do so for residents of American Samoa, Guam, Northen Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands? When combined these areas contain almost 3.5 million US citizens - about four times the population of Washington DC.

George Laiacona

Of coarse none of those Republican Senators elected in place during the 1890s are alive today. But at that time the Republicans pushed for statehood that to this day is their powerful advantage. The two territories, Arizona and New Mexico were blocked by Republicans because the Senators would be Democrats, were not able to become states until 1912. Today’s efforts by the Republicans is to keep DC from becoming a state because it just might be Democrats that gain two more Senators.

Gary Miller

George> lets trade, statehood for DC and repeal the 17th Amendment.

Gary Scoggin

Sorry, but ascribing motivations of 1890 Republicans to today’s is as improper as today’s Republicans taking credit for Lincoln.

Bailey Jones

Yes to PR (3,000,000+ citizens - larger than 40% of our states). American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands are each about the size of Galveston (city, not county). The US Virgin Islands is about twice that. But if you can scrape together enough overseas possessions to match or exceed the population of Wyoming (580,000) I'd be happy to add a 53rd "US Island Territories state.

Imagine that - a representative democracy where every citizen is represented. This seems like a goal worth pursuing.

And as George L states - just about every additional state came with this same political argument - either D vs R, or free vs slave, it's nothing new. That's why we often added states 2 at a time.

Charles Douglas

Has it really come to this? Tell me it ain't SO ...BEIJING JOE! Are we really putting our bellies to the ground trying to make a city into a state in order to harvest power? Okay then I propose we make Galveston a state! The DEMS are not the only ones who can get crazy! That is the problem here! The RADICALS want to act Radical, and crazy, and conservatives want to act with caution, and with reserve!

It is why Big Mitch allowed the LEFT to outbid him for those two Senate Seats in Georgia by $1,400. Trump tried to tell him, but Mitch McConnell wanted to hold the line on debt! How is that debt saving idea working out for America now Mitch? Mitch sold the nation out trying to save $1,400 when he knew, or had reason to know that the RADICAL LEFT, would go on a four year spending spree, wasting trillions of dollars in America IF THEY WON THOSE TWO GEORGIA SENATE SEATS!

Politics in America has regressed to the sewers and cesspools of the land! The LEFT is now attacking WHITE KIDS as being inherently racists because they were born WHITE, and are mandating this trash to be taught in the schools of the nation! How much crazier are we going to descend to in this country? The Anti-Christ & Satan are really doing their jobs well, because they have convinced millions of fools to bite on their ideologies here in America! All of what we see happening here has been written! H[censored], .even Charles Manson predicted some of this stuff we see happening would come forth! How messed up is that? Who would have thought a little female who use to mix and poor drinks in the BRONX in New York would one day be the Leader of the Free World?

Charles Douglas
