I want to give a huge thank you to The Daily News' sports section for writing a wonderful article about our U.S. Army JROTC Marksmanship Team ("Shooting for success," The Daily News, Nov. 5).

I'd be remiss if I didn't tell everyone that I share responsibilities with the coaching of this professional team with Ball High School's social studies teacher Mark Kelso.

Three years ago, as I was trying to put this team together, I found that Mark had been a pretty renowned marksman when he was a Cadet Battalion Commander. Since Mark joined the team with myself and Sgt. 1st Class Eduardo Gonzalez, our shooting team has completely skyrocketed in its competitiveness.

So, I just wanted to say thanks to Mark that every day we enjoy coming to work to coach, teach, mentor and refine their skills to compete at a higher level.

Finally, we will have a turkey shoot fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Supported by Arlan's Market of Galveston, we award a frozen turkey every half hour to a member of the public who has the high score from three air rifle shots.

Don't worry, it doesn't go bang, and there is no kick! The event is open to the public at $5 a try. Happy Thanksgiving!

Maj. Mark Knight, Ret.
