I had no idea they were still checking randomly from back just after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

My 69-year-old wife was stopped and she had to open the hood of her 2021 Camry — and open the trunk. Now she’s afraid to come to the island for shopping.

Ron tells your wife there is nothing to fear Checking of cars on ferries happen from time to time. Instead of being fearful when our cars and person are checked, we need to be thankful that they are looking out for our safety. About four years ago, the same thing happened to a person that was on the same ferry as we were. Inspections of cars on ferries happen four times per year:

Enhanced security is a fact of life in our world today. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there is a recognized need for heightened awareness and security measures wherever large numbers of people congregate, including passenger ferries

By entering the ferry property, people agree to searches of their baggage, vehicle, person or property and to provide a photo ID upon request. The terminal is under video surveillance.

This may be why your wife's car was checked. when they do a check of cars, they do not allow anyone that was chosen by random, out of getting their cars checked. Age is not a factor.

It the same if you go to an airport, anyone and anything is going to be checked. Sometimes a person is chosen for a more intense check.

The Coast Guard seeks to mitigate risks to ferries and their facilities through regulatory and operational activities. The Coast Guard’s regulatory activity involves ferry and ferry facility inspections, conducted by inspections teams who monitor compliance with operators’ security plans. According to Coast Guard officials, the Coast Guard conducts inspections of ferries four times per year:

This is what you have to do to go see the Statue of Liberty.

A primary security screening, similar to airport security procedures, is located in Battery Park, New York City or Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. All visitors boarding any Statue City Cruises ferry to Liberty Island and/or Ellis Island must pass through a screening facility before boarding.

It is recommended that you include ample time and maintain a flexible schedule to include boarding the ferry and security screening. Wait time can be several hours, particularly during peak seasons, including summer, weekends and holidays.

“ Ron tells your wife there is nothing to fear Checking of cars on ferries happen from time to time. Instead of being fearful when our cars and person are checked, we need to be thankful that they are looking out for our safety.” - Exactly this. Well said, Jim.

Denise Byrd

I am 70 years old and get frisked every single time at the airport! I must have that face.

Charles Douglas

How stupid can we get Mr. Author? Let me help you. Take a look at the Iran Nuke Deal which Russia .....yes I said Russia is sitting at the table negotiating for America, because Iran won't talk directly to American Representatives! Stupid enough? No? How about spending tax money like it grows like grass,....sending billions to other nations while we have veterans who served this nation, living on the streets! One more!!! One more please?

How about the tearing down of statues, paying millions to change names on buildings, because somebody owned Slaves centuries ago, while the SAME WOKE LEFTIST Leaders are supporting the existence of SLAVERY everyday, with their LEFTIST- WOKE policies! How about charging American parents with Domestic Terrorism for objecting to their children being taught about Sex Erotica, Sex Changes, Race Bating, PC Equity without their permission, ....when their Math, Science, Reading, and Writing Skills are steadily dropping in world ranking? With those who are running America now, as demonstrated by the present condition of this nation, "ALL STUPEDITY IS ON THE TABLE!" Vote Wisely Sir!!!!!

Robert Braeking

I normally board the ferry driving an International® truck. EVERY time we take a little stroll to the back so the security guy can look in the back. I am a regular and the security people know me, yet they still look. It seems to be a bit tedious but I have nothing better to do while I'm waiting on the next boat. Take a chill pill and let the security people do their job. The day they stop is the day some idiot tries to do something stupid.

Carlos Ponce

The Israelis have developed an effective security screening which does not hold things up as much.

The last time I was on the ferry was on a band trip to Winnie. We took I-10 to Winnie but kids had always preferred the ferry ride so we took that route on the way home. No problem with the band bus but the equipment van was delayed for screening. The bus made it in good time to Hitchcock but students needed to unload their instruments, uniforms, etc. from the van and had to wait quite a while for it to reach Hitchcock

I just hope TXDOT doesn't set up a security checkpoint at the foot of the causeway.[innocent]

Gary Scoggin

If TxDot did this should it be for cars heading northbound or southbound? 😁😁😁

Carlos Ponce

Seems there is more paranoia on the south side of the causeway.[whistling]

C. Patterson

We have an invasion on our southern boarder, millions coming across unchecked, a thousand dead, 3 children this week, Drugs, Guns, Human trafficking and enslaved immigrants by the Cartel and you’re telling me they check your groceries on the Ferry? 🤦🏻‍♀️

So we have an estimate of 2 million who've already crossed and 5 Million migrants expected to cross by the end on Biden's term in office ( about 55 thousand a week) but his new “ Inflation Reduction Act” boondoggle spending included 80 Billion in the IRS Budget to include hiring 87 THOUSAND NEW IRS AGENTS… not more Boarder Patrol Agents to help secure the boarder not to mention the MILLIONS And MILLIONS of tax payer dollars spent to house, educate and medical cost for the new immigrants… I just hope your hearing the truth and are registered to vote! VOTE THESE DANGEROUS IDEALOGUES OUT OF OFFICE!

domenico nuckols

We have to be vigilant. The next domestic terrorist could be your neighbor next door. They may use the ferry many times then, boom. Or it could be the domestic terrorists thinking Loser Trump commanded them to do it. We have to be vigilant.

C. Patterson

A “Masked Rider” shares his infinite insights

Gary Miller

Dominico > Europeans are vigilent. They are again cutting their forests for fire wood. When a reporter asked them why? They said because of Biden's blunder.

Gary Miller

Dominico > Vigilant Europeans are importing fire wood from Brasil, Canada and the US. Asked why they say Biden's blunder.

Gary Miller

Dominico > Vigilant Industral countries are building over 200 new coal fired power plants. Some coal fired European power plants that were shut down are being restarted again. WHY? Biden's blunder.

Gary Miller

The inspection crews were hired when people were worried about a terrorist attack. Once hired they can't be fired. When every one is too old to remember an attack they will still be searching.

George Croix

I'm having trouble figuring out why anyone is scared to open the hood and trunk of a car. If it's an issue of physical disability, I would bet that asking the security folks to do so for you as you standby with a polite explanation about that would work.

Age and sex are no impediments to mayhem if one is determined to commit it.

As remotely likely as it seems, consider what a ferry sunk in the shipping lanes would cause.

Jim Forsythe

George, some people are fearful anytime they interact with authorities.

My wife for a long time had a hard time handling interacting with police.

She now does ok, but still has jitters around police.

If that is how Rons wife feels, I can completely understand it.

I, myself have a few phobias, one is calling someone on the phone.

It is not rational, but it is mine.

George Croix

Ok. Fair enough, Jim.

But, unfortunately for those folks, it’s not a reason to stop inspections. I’d bet that explaining said nervousness to security would help. Even as uncivil as the nation has become I still believe most folks will offer help before criticism if aware of a need for it.

But, I could be wrong…

Carlos Ponce

It's not fear, it's the time involved. Measure the amount of time it takes to inspect ONE vehicle. Now multiply that by the number of vehicles. You are taking a ferry to get somewhere, not wait for everyone to get inspected. Incorporating Israeli inspection protocols would cut that to a minimum.

Gary Scoggin

I thought the checks were random and not for everyone.

Carlos Ponce

That depends on the "inspectors". Checking out the 69 year old lady tells me this one went above "random".

Jim Forsythe

Rons wife had to open the hood of her 2021 Camry — and open the trunk. Nowhere did he say they were checking out his 69-year-old wife, just her car. If she was flying, she would have been checked by a TSA security. Being 69 years old, would not get her an expedited screening process, if flying.

Screening for Passengers 75 and Older---Passengers 75 and older can receive some form of expedited screening through risk-based intelligence-driven security that allows TSA to better focus resources on passengers who more likely pose a risk.

Toyota Camry come with a trunk latch located near the driver’s seat. It allows you to quickly and easily open the trunk of your Camry from inside the vehicle.

It also come with a hood opening lever inside and all that is needed to open the hood outside the vehicle is pull up on the auxiliary catch lever. These two processes do not take that long.

If one is not willing to do a few things for the safety of all, they may need to think why I'm I not willing to spend the small amount of time it will take.

It is not clear why his wife was upset, but the amount of time used in the check, did not seem to be the reason.

Carlos Ponce

Does Jim think 69 year old women fit a terroristic profile?

Gary Miller

Security teams must work a 40 hour a week system. A four man team with one supervisor would be Over $1,000 a day X 365 days per year. That would be 4 times as many as you see. How many years can they spend on inspecting before it would be cheaper to build a bridge?

Robert Braeking

Carlos, Obviously you don't use the ferry. It does not take that much time. It takes more time for a no-driving dufus to get their travel trailer ON the ferry. I've never had a problem even when driving a truck with 18 tires. Believe me - it's tight. Rookies need not apply.

Carlos Ponce

Time is relative.

Jim Forsythe

Robert, my brother drove trucks. What are the toughest roads to drive, with a big rig? My guess a few years ago would have been I-10 going to Lousanna.

His thing that he hated the most was people that drove to close to his trailer, to get in the draft from his rig.

Jim Forsythe

Gary you and George know when dealing with the Coast Guard, you are dealing all kind of requirements.

Such as the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002.

What we have in place in the USA is very good at protecting us.

George Croix

Yep.

The Coast Guard is not to be trifled with.

When the refinery itself inside the fence line became a MARSEC site post 9/11 it was a worry about possibly delaying emergency responses due to rules for site entry permission but it all worked out before a problem. Security is always inconvenient to some degree.

My SIL is the only family member now still TWIC’d….

Jim Forsythe

Geor, two of my sons are.

Jim Forsythe

George, two of my sons are.

Gary Scoggin

I’m still TWIC’d. (I renewed it a few times.)

Robert Braeking

Jim,

I-10 in Lousiana is bad but Dallas traffic is worse. No respect. People had a habit of hanging out in the blind spot by the right front tire. I cured that with a sign: "WARNING - If this tire blows out you will die today"

When I was picking up fresh shrimp in South Louisiana those skinny 2-lane roads required a lot of attention. The latest thing is 'brake checking'. People changing lanes in front of a loaded truck and jamming on their brakes. It is impossible to lock up the brakes on a fully grossed out truck. Maybe we need a new sign on the back of the trailer: "WARNING - If you brake check this truck you will die today"

Drafting is also stupid especially when you do it to an empty truck. A truck that is designed to stop 80,000# is going to stop much quicker than your car when it is only weighs 35,000#. The newer truck have antilock brakes. Slow braking is not required to keep the trailer in line. Also they have adaptive cruise control. If someone cuts the truck it will automatically apply full engine brake which does not turn on the brake lights. Good luck to drafters.

George Croix

Robert, that's also a 'routine' thing with the idiots who pull in front of a truck/travel trailer rig and then hit the brakes. Unfortunately stupid can't be fixed....

Robert Braeking

My truck/travel trailer's CGVW is 26,000#. Good luck, brake checkers.......Oh. And did I mention the dash cam?

Don Schlessinger

When the Bolivar ferry opened after Ike lines of cars and trucks using it sometimes were more than a mile long. I was working in Lafayette used it used it every Friday afternoon. If you didn't have a book to read while you waited it seemed to take ages to get to the ferry. More than once I "volunteered" for that inspection. They weren't supposed to do it but understood the problem and did the inspection from time to time. A cold soft drink was great for convincing them to give me a break. So they were actually just normal people earning a living. I did find that the Monday 0300 eastbound ferry line was never long.

domenico nuckols

Forgive me Carlos for I have sinned. You are a know it all> Now you are an expert on what DHS procedures are. Home grown domestic terrorists come in any shape or form, watch the news.

Carlos Ponce

Okay, Demonico, name ONE 69 year old female who has committed an act of terrorism in this country.

domenico nuckols

Forgive me Carlos for I have sinned. You are a know it all> No Carlos I can’t. But if DHS made a rule not to search the elderly, that would be an open invasion to terrorists use one. Cannot stop being vigilant. If you don’t there will be a ferry sunk in State Route 87.

Carlos Ponce

In other word, Demonico cannot find one instance of a 69 year old female terrorist. Go back to an earlier post I made. They should use Israeli protocols. Does THAT mean don't search the elderly? No.

Jim Forsythe

Carlos, what age would you exempt someone from checks from security? Would you exempt a 69-year-old at the airport from being checked by TSA. If your answer is yes, then you are not up to date with the measures taken.

They are not just looking for bombs at airports or on ferries, but other things such as hazardous materials. If one cannot agree to do a few simple things like opening a trunk, they do not need to be using a ferry.

In a 3-year period the FBI reviewed 157 “suspicious incidents” involving the Washington state ferry system, the nation’s largest. Of those, seven were classified as having an “extremely” high likelihood of being pre-operational planning, 11 were classified as a “high” likelihood and 49 as “medium,” according to briefing documents provided in late August to members of the House Homeland Security Committee.

What does a terrorist look like? Can they look like you and me. Can they be Female. Can they be over 70 years old. The answer they can be anyone, male or female and any age.

If you were in charge, would you exempt anyone from being checked for security, for any reason reasons? If you answered yes and you were in charge of security on ferries, you would no longer have a job.

Since 1983, the United States and Israel have met annually via the Joint Political-Military Group (JPMG) to promote shared policies, address common threats and concerns, and identify new areas for security cooperation. TSA uses some of Israels methods, because we help finance them.

If you compare the USA to Israel for size, we have less terroir attacks.

The TLV terror attack proved Israel's security protocols need urgent revamp.

IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi said an investigation has been launched into his forces' conduct during the manhunt for the terrorist because the presence of armed civilians among the troops w unacceptable. People grabbing their weapons and running into the streets to chase terrorists could end with casualties from friendly fire.

AGE?

Here's what I posted originally: "The Israelis have developed an effective security screening which does not hold things up as much."

"What Israeli Airport Security Can Teach the World"

I never mention age. THERE ARE A SET OF protocols TO FOLLOW, things to LOOK for!!!!! CHECK THE ISRAELI WEBSITE!

Jim Forsythe

We use some of ISRAELI stuff. But we have other methods that we use that protects our transportation system. But us using another system is not the issue. What is, is that a 69-year-old woman that was upset. You try and make it sound like a big deal, when it is not. Try and enter a refinery and you will see how long it takes before you are allowed to enter with an escort. It great that we have people making sure that we are as safe as possible.

Times you referred to age are posted below. If you are not talking about Rons wife, who are you talking about?

Carlos Ponce Aug 25, 2022 9:42am

Does Jim think 69-year-old women fit a terroristic profile?

69 year old female is NOT part of Israeli protocol, Jim.

Carlos, what you just posted; is just sad.

Jim, I just suspect you're still upset with your ex-girlfriends. They're around 69, right?

Jim Forsythe

Now what are you talking about? We are talking about security on ferries.

Your new post is sadder than the last one.

Carlos Ponce

What is sad is how Jim thinks his ex-girlfriends now aged 69 are terrorist threats.[rolleyes]

Jim Forsythe

You are going off the deep end.

Carlos Ponce

Wait until your ex-girlfriends hear what you think about them.[scared]

Jim Forsythe

domenico nuckols

Forgive me Carlos for I have sinned. You are a know it all> There was never an attack using airplanes. But it happened. My point is, there hasn’t been an attack using elderly, but there maybe a first time. Stay vigilant.

Carlos Ponce

Are you threatening an attack?

domenico nuckols

Forgive me Carlos for I have sinned. You are a know it all> NO! Stop looking thru your orange-colored glasses. I’m concerned of the followers of LOSER Trump will stage an attack on the gay community. So far, the plots have been foiled.

Carlos Ponce

Ridiculous post, Demonico.

George Croix

Unfortunately the ferry checks are so cursory they would only catch the most inept of intended bad guys, and fact is it’s entirely possible for a driver to not even know he has the means for disaster in his vehicle if he himself didn’t check it ….no matter his age.

The days of lighting a fuse with a match are long gone, folks….

That aside it’s foolish to ever think that safety is 100% anywhere, but at least some effort, even a weak one, has to be expended to avoid open season or total chaos.

To do a thorough job on each car would take so long that it would be faster to go around the long way by road for many. Be careful what you wish for or complain about….

domenico nuckols

Forgive me Carlos for I have sinned. You are a know it all> Bless your heart, Carlos

George Laiacona

About the ferry safety. There are still many different kinds of Terrorist attacks in play all over our country. What would you do if you were on the ferry when an explosion took place? Would you then complain about security checks?

domenico nuckols

What Biden blunder? I guess the Russians shut off the gas!

domenico nuckols

Carlos > JAIL

domenico nuckols

Carlos > Your god Loser Trump is going to the pen

Carlos Ponce

No, demonico, he is not.

domenico nuckols

Tell me why you took a while later information unless he selling it to the Soviets in Chinese

domenico nuckols

Trump has no right to take any classified information from anywhere because he does not have a security clearance

domenico nuckols

Once the present Lisa’s office he loses every single security clearance he has

Carlos Ponce

We'll pray for you Demonico. You clearly have lost it.

domenico nuckols

Carlos why do you take flashlight information it’s not his yes US governments

domenico nuckols

Soy why did he take the documents

Robert Braeking

He declassified the documents before leaving office. The documents are for his Presidential Library. The FBI was looking for documents that incriminate Hillary, Hunter, Obama, and The Big Guy so they can 'lose' them. In the picture was a copy of Time Magazine. Why did they confiscate that? It was clearly an FBI witch hunt blanket warrant which the 4th amendment protects against. I sure hope Trump is President again so he can fire the entire 7th floor.

Carlos Ponce

We'll pray for you Demonico. You clearly have lost it.

domenico nuckols

That's a flat out lie. The should go to the Dance Hall at Sing Sing!

George Croix

Elected Presidents do not have an issued 'security clearance' like others have because as an elected President he is also the chief law enforcement and legal authority in the land, and has a right by virtue of being chosen by the people to lead them to access everything that Office wants access to....all 'security clearances' for everyone else flow down from that top position through the various entities working under the Executive. The President is not 'read in' or 'read out' on security issues.

This little factoid makes it dicey in either direction to claim or disclaim any security related authority.

The President DOES have unlimited right to decide classification of anything, just as he does the right to pardon anybody. If a President, any of them, say something is declassified then it legally is declassified, right then. It does NOT have to have yet had any classification markings removed.

This is the President, though...not others, like VP or Sec. of State...

One may recall if honest enough to do so that an ex-Sec of State had hundreds of 'classified' documents on an illegal server, that we know about, having escaped the hammers and bleach bit treatment, many Top Secret and several SCI...more than found in the Mar a Lago political raid. And that server is KNOWN to have been hacked by foreign sources. Penalty....zip...certainly no home raid...

The only known hacks at Mar a Lago were the ones spreading docs on the floor next to boxes of magazines and photographing same then 'leaking' it so what passes for a left wing base, which includes nearly all of the MSM, would go bananas.....easy guess....rotten to the core, as the upper ranks of the DOJ/FBI have proven to be, now working on their third election interference in a row to the potential benefit of the left....

And our senile President gives a Fidel style fist shaking red faced (and walls....chuckle) diatribe declaring who somebody told him to say enemies of the state are.....

Guess inflation, and gas prices, and a border invasion, and food prices, and supply chains, and China, and a resurgent Taliban thanks to that fiasco, and his cancel culture buddies and the attempted CRT crap, and letting in enough fentanyl to kill us all several times, and crime going nuts, and treating parents as domestic terrorists, and conflating criminals with honest gun owners, and a baby formula debacle, and appointing an Admin. more worried about checking PC boxes than competence, and turning the military into a 'woke' studies group, and being a 'leadership' laughing stock on the world stage in a time of greater instability since the Cold war are less our 'enemies' than our neighbors....

At least James Buchanan can finally move off the bottom spot.....
