In response to the commentary's by David Michael Smith ("Trump's presidency one for history books," The Daily News. Dec. 20), Marty Fluke ("Anti-Trump columnist should have exhibited civility," The Daily News, Dec. 22) and Stephen Hodgson ("Factual assessment of Trump's work was not uncivil," The Daily News, Jan. 19):

I didn't see factual assessments. I saw moralistic drivel. Morality is subjective; what one sees as good, another may see as evil. We each have an intellect and conscience that guides us and we're responsible for our decisions.

Words used to describe President Trump were grotesque bigot, misogynist, enemy of the working class, buffoon, white supremacist and spoiled brat, etc. Civility is a good debate; character assassination is the lack of civility. Smith and Hodgson have every right to their own opinions and choices; they don't need to act as morality judges.

It's ugly.

They may argue the merits of Marxism or the evils of capitalism; I will listen and respect their opinions. I will not listen to name-calling.

I have lived through several presidential administrations, some I liked and some I didn't, but as the duly elected President of the United States, I gave them my respect and never wanted their failure.

The "great unwashed," the privileged elite and all those in between should have a voice. All are worthy to be heard.

Nope.

George Croix

Wasting your keyboard Donna. The ‘resistance’ is too busy doing exactly what they claimed to be a direct threat to our democracy to listen or care.
If they ever grow up they’ll learn you don’t have to like people to work with ‘em - maybe...🙄

Mike Zeller

Every American should respect the OFFICE of President of the United States. That's different than respecting the guy, holding that office.

Carlos Ponce

It does not amaze me how the fake news spews out DNC talking points about Trump. What does amaze me is how otherwise intelligent people accept it as true.
After his presidential candidacy announcement, the DNC and its puppets, the fake news media put out the story that the announcement was racist directed at Mexicans. But if you look at it line by line, his statements were factual.
"It's racist, it's racist!, SQUAWK, WHISTLE," the Liberals would parrot. No it was not.
Then we have Liberal pundits and the fake news media saying that Trump's statements after Charlottesville were racist. I dare ANYONE to find where he said KKK members and white supremacists were good people. It never happened. What he said there were good and bad on both sides - the sides being those for statue removal and those against statue removal. The "good" who were against statue removal were the HISTORICAL PRESERVATIONISTS, not the Klan nor the White Supremacists. They are similar to those historical preservationists in Galveston County - also not racist - who want to keep the Confederate Heroes Monument in front of the old Galveston Courthouse.
Take time to read and research before you spew hatred against President Trump. Like any human he is not without fault but he does not deserve the constant onslaught of hatred directed at him.
Now we have people saying that a MAGA cap is similar to a white Klan hood. No, it is not.
Take time to view the following short video.

Carlos, people have only to listen to Trump himself, or read his tweets, to develop a healthy disrespect for the man. No media spin needed at all. My disrespect for the president began at least 20 years ago, probably more. Since he began his political career, he has done nothing to swing the needle in the positive direction.

Don't always blame the media and liberal pundits, Carlos. Take a good, hard, objective look at the man's past, his actions, his beliefs, his tendencies. He's not worthy of your respect.

Carlos Ponce

Steve, most of the people don't bother to listen to what the president says. They wait for the talking heads on the news to interpret what Trump said.
Case in point, can you find anywhere where Trump said KKK, white supremacists, or Nazis were "good people" in Charlottesville? Or did some just accept the false Liberal interpretation of what he meant by "good people".
"Don't always blame the media and liberal pundits..." They're the ones who came up with that false often repeated narrative.
"Take a good, hard, objective look at the man's past, his actions, his beliefs, his tendencies." With Jesus, all is forgiven. Evangelicals and church going Catholics view him as a repentant born again Christian. Jesus forgives everyone, Liberals only forgive each other.
Saul of Tarsus persecuted Christ's followers. Paul spread the Good News. They're the same man.

Carlos Ponce

Let's use Steve's methodology and examine the Democrat party's past, actions, beliefs, tendencies.
Democrat Party - the party whose states seceded from the United States. The party which gave rise to the KKK, segregation, voter suppression (The Jaybird primary in Texas) following the Civil War.
Hillary's mentor Grand Kleagle of the KKK Senator Robert Byrd. Doesn't matter that he renounced that. Steve Fouga insists we "Take a good, hard, objective look at the man's past.."
If it were not for Republicans, the Civil Rights Act would not have passed in a majority Democrat Congress.
Democrats who hold a religious litmus test to Trump's appointments. Mazie Hirono, Kamala Harris, Dick Durbin to name a few.
Shall I continue to examine the Democrats' past and present?

Emile Pope

Let’s not. Because it’s ridiculous. Trying to excuse or legitimize the actions of donald by bringing up actions of more than a half century ago smacks of desperation. Especially when you ignore the recent actions of Republicans...

Carlos Ponce

Just trying to equalize standards, Emile. If Steve is going to look into Donald Trump's past then we must do that for EVERYONE. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Steve Fouga

Carlos asks: "Shall I continue to examine the Democrats' past and present?"

That is entirely up to you, Carlos. I do it with some public figures, in this case, Trump. Should Kamala Harris make it deep into the primaries, I'll examine her past as well. I doubt I'll need to worry much about Trump in the primaries. He'll be done before then. Nikki Haley, though, there's a real possibility! [cool]

Carlos Ponce

I think Kamala will be nominated by the Democrats. It will be their choice. It really doesn't matter who they nominate. They're all the same but Kamala has two things Democrats want. She's female and a member of a minority. But Republicans have a trump card.[beam]

Steve Fouga

I think the Dems will nominate Sen. John Tester of Montana, if they wish to win. I'd love to see Tester vs Haley.

Steve Fouga

I should have said I think Tester would give the Dems the best chance of winning. There might be others that could win also.

Carlos Ponce

In the era of Identity Politics, Jon Tester will not be the presidential nominee. He's white, which is not considered an asset in the Democrat Party and he presents himself as moderate. The extreme über Left is now the voice of the Democrat Party. They might nominate him as VP to counter balance the ticket. Predictions, however, have the ticket of Harris-Booker as the favorite to win the nomination but not the office.

Jim Forsythe

You may see a ticket of Amy Klobuchar and Julian Castro or Beto" O'Rourke. The reason this may happen is Amy would help in the rust belt area and Julian or Beto because they would help carry Texas.
The other reason Beto may be on the ticket is because he is able to raise money.
The candidates that are the ones that run against Trump, may not even have declared yet, as running.

The voice of the Democrat Party is the people that will go to the polls and elect the person that they want to run for President.
The voice of the Republican party is Trump!

Carlos Ponce

"The voice of the Democrat Party is the people that will go to the polls and elect the person that they want to run for President."
I hope that means no more "Super Delegates". Bernie got the votes last time, Hillary got the delegates.

Jim Forsythe

"I hope that means no more "Super Delegates". Bernie got the votes last time, Hillary got the delegates.'
Why would you care as you are not going to vote for anyone but Trump.

The Democrats intended to make a significant reduction of the number of superdelegates and may include automatically binding their votes to their states' choice. One group is pushing to do away with them altogether.
They have not yet set the rules for 2020.

Carlos Ponce

"Why would you care as you are not going to vote for anyone but Trump.'
Because it's not fair.

Emile Pope

Apparently the writer wasn’t aware of the horrible things that were written and said about President Obama, his wife, and their children. Or the fact that the person currently in the White House was personally responsible for saying many of them. Where was their outrage then?

Carlos Ponce

"Apparently the writer wasn’t aware of the horrible things that were written and said about President Obama, his wife, and their children."
Was it said by any elected official? Were these statements supported by the press? No and No.

Jim Forsythe

Some of the things Trump has said about Obama.

Trump said that Obama was not born in the United States.

President Barack Obama “has been the most ignorant president in our history"

“No, I meant he’s the founder of ISIS. I do. He was the most valuable player. I give him the most valuable player award,” Trump said

“Under the leadership of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the generals have been reduced to rubble.” He labeled that development as “embarrassing for our country.”

George Croix

Jim, batting 500 would get him a few million bucks a year in the Majors.....[beam]

Carlos Ponce

"Trump said that Obama was not born in the United States."
Barack Hussein Obama was not born in the United States. He was born in Kenya. Barack Hussein Obama II has a Hawaiian birth certificate.
"President Barack Obama 'has been the most ignorant president in our history' "
Evidence to support that claim.
"I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go."
He mispronounced corps as corpse.
Spelled "respect" "R-S-P-E-C-T."
Said, "Even though most people agree... I'm presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don't take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind-meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right."
Jedis don't do "mind melds". Vulcans do.
While in Hawaii he said, "When I meet with world leaders, what's striking -- whether it's in Europe or here in Asia..."
"The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings, and inefficiencies to our health care system." Well he was right about the "inefficiencies".
"I have been practicing...I bowled a 129. It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something." He did apologize to Special Olympics.
"What I was suggesting -- you're absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith..." George Stephanopoulos, corrected Obama by saying you mean 'your Christian faith"."
"I'm here with the Girardo family here in St. Louis." He said this while in Kansas City, MO.
"Let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel's. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under a McCain...administration."
"How's it going, Sunshine?" he said in Sunrise, Florida.
"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today ..."
"Ten thousand people died -- an entire town destroyed." He was talking about a Kansas town where 12 people were killed by a tornado.

Jim Forsythe

"Barack Hussein Obama was not born in the United States. He was born in Kenya."
Carlos, do you think Trump was talking about the Presidents father?
In most stories about the President Obama, they did not or now call him the 11 or junior.
Why would Trump spent all the money he did to try and prove Sr was not born in the USA?
The way you said his name(Sr.) was not correct by the way you think, as it would have been
Barack Hussein Obama Sr.

"President Barack Obama 'has been the most ignorant president in our history' "
If you want to determine a President by mistakes, Trump takes the top honors. Just the other day he said:
"Everybody knows that walls work," Trump said. "You look at San Antonio, you look at so many different places. They go from one of the most unsafe cities in the country to one of the safest cities, immediately.”

Carlos Ponce

"Carlos, do you think Trump was talking about the Presidents father?"
He was talking about Barack Hussein Obama.

Carlos Ponce

"The way you said his name(Sr.) was not correct by the way you think, as it would have been Barack Hussein Obama Sr."
Not necessarily.

Carlos Ponce

Obama was called out by a Supreme Court Justice during a State of the Union message for lying but he is not an elected official.

Diane Turski

That was not a Supreme Court Justice, Carlos. That was a congressman who has since been voted out!

Carlos Ponce

I did forget about Joe Wilson but I am writing about Justice Samuel Alito.
see:
https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2010/01/if_alito_did_say_not_true_abou.html

Carlos Ponce

By the way, the House voted to publicly rebuke Representative Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina, for his brief outburst of “You Lie!” against President Obama during the address before a joint session of Congress.
Can the same be said about any elected Democrat Representative or Senator who says unkind things about Trump?

Emile Pope

Because he did it at the SOTU address!!! He interrupted it for the first time in history. Wonder why this President was different?

Carlos Ponce

Will there be a SOTU this year? Nancy is the only Speaker to want it postponed or canceled.
And an elected official saying such nasty things about a sitting president no matter what the venue without being reprimanded....... Hmmm..... They do have the Freedom of Speech. Joe Wilson did apologize.
"Obama accepts apology for Wilson outburst"
http://www.nbcnews.com/id/32767813/ns/politics-health_care_reform/t/obama-accepts-apology-wilson-outburst/

Diane Turski

Mike Zeller is correct in pointing out the distinction between the Office of the President and the President who may be in that office. President Trump has done NOTHING but disrespect the Office of the President, and therefore he does not deserve any respect from anyone who understands that important distinction.

Carlos Ponce

Diane, if you want to HATE, that's your prerogative.
Have a nice day.[beam]

Mike Meador

Michael Richards

Diane Turski might remember when Iranians first started yelling Death to America. Then they said they meant the American government, not really the people. Nice sidestep, just like criticizing whatever the President does but then saying you respect the presidency.

George Croix

I'd say Mike got it right about The Office of President.
I dislike Pres. Trump, but there was only one option that had a chance to win, and she was not an option...imo...

But, for Ms. Turski, a LOT of people considered the recent ex-President going on a world apology tour blaming his own country for other's ills to be 'disrespecting the office of the President', along with the entire population of the country, past and present. And relegating the American middle class to second place in the world, and having more people on food stamps and unemployment than anyone ever had, and masterminding the worst recovery in decades, and inviting the BLM trash to the WH while the cops they called for being dead were being assassinated, and covering up with 'the video', and..........................
Not enough, though, to keep obama from 'being more flexible' after re-election.....which, of course, was very 'progressive'....
Want Russian collusion, there it is......
A few think it disrespects the office to back stab and run off at the mouth about a President's successor, too....but, that's now a common thing, and, I suspect, Pres. Trump will keep it going in 2025....

Emile Pope

Check the expiration date on your tinfoil...

George Croix

Well, if it isn't the Governor of the State of Denial, again...!!
Good morning, Pope.
Still pretending that Nobel Prize award wasn't REALLY a waste, huh?
Well, everybody needs at least one lost cause to battle for.....

Rusty Schroeder

LOL, The Usual Suspects is not only the name of a sportstalk radio show on 97.5 FM in Houston, we have our own in the GCDN comment section when it comes to politics.

Lisa Gray

Thank you Donna. I feel the same way as you. I did not care for President Obama's policies and some of his social stances, but I would never have ever talked about him in the way that people disparage President Trump. I currently work with a few people who speak the same way about him in a work environment which I feel is highly unprofessional, but I keep my mouth shut. I do feel that when these people are so horribly nasty about our President, it speaks volumes about THEIR character and not that of our President. I will always pray for his success and the success of our nation. How foolish to do otherwise!

Emile Pope

By speaking the truth? He didn’t pay his creditors, had a sham university, numerous bankruptcies, refused to release his taxes, lied about who would pay for the wall, illegally paid off mistresses, refused to divest, and has the most scandal ridden administration since Harding. The fact that some people refuse to accept these facts doesn’t make them disparaging. Look how many people in his campaign are being indicted and convicted.

Carlos Ponce

"He didn’t pay his creditors..." That has been DEBUNKED, Emile. They had what they call a CONTRACT. The terms of the contract specified monetary penalties should timelines, specifics not be met. Try a little research. You'll find all your other reasons presented have a credibility problem. They're just DNC talking points, distortions of what really happened.

Emile Pope

Saying that something has been debunked doesn't make it so.Tell ya what, go to a restaurant, eat your fill, drink your fill, then say that the meal wasn't satisfactory and that you don't intend to pay...let me know how it works out...

Carlos Ponce

Emile, I've provided links that prove that accusation is pure bunk in the past. There's no convincing you here. You're never going to accept the truth. You'd rather believe DNC political talking points.
And your restaurant analogy makes no sense at all since no written and signed contract is involved. Professor Kingsfield would have a field day with you.

Emile Pope

When you provide a like to a blog authored by “True American” with an eagle or American flag as the header and pictures of men in camo, I tend to be skeptical...

Carlos Ponce

That was not the case here, Emile.

Carlos Ponce

And I never "provide a like to a blog". That sounds like a Facebook thing. I'm not on Facebook.

Paula Flinn

Trump did not honor his contracts with people who provided goods and services to his casinos and golf clubs. They were on TV complaining how he only paid pennies on the dollars that Trump owed them. They had contracts with him that he did not honor. When they asked for the rest of the money, they were told that they were not getting it, and that if they didn’t accept what he offered, Trump would sue, and the money would be held up in court for lyears. The man who equipped his casinos with pianos was especially affected. He almost lost his business waiting for Trump to pay him over $30,000 he owed him. It certainly put him in a bind for the next year or two for inventory and having money for his family. The actual contractors and businessmen who Trump cheated were relating their personal experiences with Mr. Trump, and I believe them.
You and I have to pay our full bills for goods and services and fully repay bank loans. Trump did not. Ordinary people suffered because of his unethical behavior. Michael Bloomberg, the richest man in NY, said US banks won’t loan money to Trump. Most of us think that’s why Trump is so cozy with Russia; khe owes them money. Because Trump doesn’t honor his contracts, I cannot respect him. Trump thinks rules are for everyone else. The rules don’t apply to him and his family. Trump has also used his position as President to make money. The Republicans in Congress have looked the other way. Mueller has access to Trump’s taxes. We shall see.

Carlos Ponce

Paula, the courts ruled in Trump's favor. Funny these were settled years ago but re-emerged in 2016.....Hmmmm

Emile Pope

No they didn't. How about donald university? donald foundation?

Jarvis Buckley

Donna you will never change the communist type behavior of these so called democrats. They are the Deplorable's of today's politics. They will say & do anything to degrade our Zpresident. Even if it means destroying our Country.

George Croix

I can't resist a good joke for the day:L
"Saying that something has been debunked doesn't make it so."
Now THAT, considering the source, is FUNNY, I don't care who ya are....[beam][beam][beam][beam][beam]
Another Do As I Say Not As I Do gem from the playbook of usual suspects...

Jarvis Buckley

Diane you are surprisingly mistaken.
The congressman did verbally call him out but also a Justice violently
shook his head in disbelief in what President Obama was saying. Surely
you recall that.

Ron Shelby

Respect the Office of the President ..yes. Not necessarily the person in it.

Carlos Ponce

That's up to you, Ron.
Romans 13:2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
1 Timothy 6:1-2 (KJV) Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
1 Peter 2:17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. (You can replace "emperor" with "president").
