With scorching heat and raging wildfires in the west, and torrential downpours and massive flooding in the east, global warming is not just about a gentle sea rise anymore. These tragic consequences of dumping greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, call for drastic remedies.

For starters, we should rejoin the Paris Climate Accords, and actually become a world leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One of the most effective ways is by changing our diet.

Yes, that. Last fall, Oxford University's prestigious Food Climate Research Network concluded that solving the global warming catastrophe requires a massive shift to a plant-based diet. A 2010 United Nations report blamed animal agriculture for 19 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, 70 percent of freshwater use, and 38 percent of land use.

Carbon dioxide is emitted by burning forests to create animal pastures and by transporting animals. The more damaging methane and nitrous oxide are released from digestive tracts of cattle and from animal waste cesspools, respectively.

In an environmentally sustainable world, we must replace meat and dairy products in our diet by vegetables, fruits, and grains, just as we replace fossil fuels by wind, solar, and other pollution-free energy sources.

Let's start with our next trip to a supermarket.

"Plant-based diet can help with global warming"
Since vegetarians are more flatulent than omnivores, this would add to the green house gas emissions. You must own a lot of "Beano" stock!

Brian Tamney

No I am not giving up meT for your global warming hoax.

Jarvis Buckley

This article hurts a lot of farmers. Just on a theory.

Robert Braeking

Your plants won't grow without carbon dioxide. Plants convert the carbon to cellulose and discard the oxygen. BTW - Humans cannot digest cellulose without first feeding it to an animal that can digest it and eating the resulting meat. Mmmmmm

Gary Miller

I enjoy my plant based diet. Cow eats grass, I eat cow. I also enjoy the polls that show vegans are converting to a omnivor diet. I suspect farting in bed, in church, at dinner, on bus and every where has some thing to do with the conversions from grass to meat.

Gary Scoggin

I, too, am a vegetarian by proxy.

George Croix

Being a lot less gullible would help global warming a lot more.

Jarvis Buckley

On a very different note G.G. Shinn
Who was the blue eyed soul singer with the Bookie King passed away.
They played at the Bamboo Hut back in the sixtys & 70's for those of us that don't have dementia.😀💃

Mr. Driscoll's letter is accurate. The science is settled. Those who dispute the facts are not skeptics or Deniers, they are Climate Change dismissers who for a variety of reasons have their own worldview and agenda.
The facts are that a plant based diet not only decreases our carbon footprint but promotes individual health. For instance a study in JAMA Internal Medicine found there was a 10% lower risk of death from all causes and a 12% decrease in cardiac disease for every 3% increase in total calories people got from plant protein. Multiple studies show links between cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia and the consumption of animal protein.
If every American skipped eating meat for a single day, the emissions savings would be like taking 8 million cars off the road.
Presenting the facts does not work in trying to convince the "Dismissers" Hopefully their own self interest in a healthier life will make an impact.
In the debate about Climate Change, I tell the Dismisser, " if you are right and I am wrong, then you end up with a healthier , more prosperous life in a cleaner world. But if I am right, then we are all dead if we do nothing."

I think more fuel is used to grow corn or beans than letting a cow eat grass. Food is fuel and the amount of calories consumed defines how much energy was used to produce it. 2016 was the first year farmers produced 3,100 calories for every person on earth. A global food surplus. Hunger is a government problem. Their hungry people earn too little to buy enough food. Nearly all countries with hunger are ruled by dictators or socialist governments.

Gary Scoggin

Gary... you are correct about hunger. There’s generally enough food on earth to go around. Shortages are generally political in nature. (Not necessarily socialist but definitely dictatorial.) Food is a weapon that can be used against groups a particular despot doesn’t like.

Carlos Ponce

Herbivores have eyes on the side of their head. Omnivores and carnivores have eyes in front. Where are your eyes?

Randy Chapman

We are omnivores. That's the reason we have canine teeth.

The science is settled?
Science, by it's nature, is never settled.
Question:
How large had the 'ozone hole' above Antarctica ever been in history BEFORE we had satellites in place that could detect and measure it?
How warm was the earth before anyone had a way to measure temperature?
Why were some of the warmest measurements on record BEFORE the industrial revolution, if Man is the cause?
Why were the more recent multiple years, what, 15, 17, something like that, of no measured temps change?

Uh huh.......

Name call all you want......I don't care.....

Gary Miller

George! You are on the correct line. If melting ice is so bad why wasn't it when Greenland was partly ice free and a major exporter of timber, grain, leather, wine and meat to Europe. Why when the Artic ocean was ice free in August and September every year for 400 years in a row. Over recorded history the ocean rise has been 320 ft. Why is an inch or two per century a disaster? Global temps, averaging 51.9 Deg. F., stopped climbing in 1998. Down to 51.3 Deg. F. today but global warming activists still cling to computer models that were fed bad info as if computers control the weather.

Brian Tamney

What has the world come to when we must accept the settled for20 to 30 years max science of global warming, yet we must dismiss the settled for hundreds of years science of gender. SMH

Robert Braeking

Scientific consensus is an oxymoron. It can be either or neither but it can't be both.

Gary Scoggin

People like Mr. Driscoll are entitled to make their own judgements and make their lifestyle decisions accordingly. They are also entitled to advocate for their position as he’s done here. Few here would argue that. I know this bunch generally fad differing opinions about climate change than I do. I’m not here to argue that today.

However, to provide context to Mr. Driscoll’s statements, about 1/3 of the non-water atmospheric warming potential comes from methane. (This is a measurable effect regardless of what you think its climate impact may be.) the leading source of methane emissions the world over is from agricultural activities - mainly from livestock and from turning over new ground. These are facts, fl free to make your own inferences regarding climate impact. Mr.Driscoll, and others, have used this to makes do advocate for a lifestyle choice. I don’t really agree with it but I respect him for having the courage of his convictions.

Gary Miller

Gary! I think you are mostly correct but misspoke on one thing. Agricultural activities? Activities of all living things not farming is responcible for most Methane emissions.

Gary Miller

I believe in climate change. We are 134 years into the fifth climate change since Christ was born. Climate changes usually last 500 to 600 years. This climate warming change started around 1885. The new world was discovered after the last cooling climate change began. The war of independence, 1812, Mexican war and civil war all happened during that cooling climate change. That climate change was called the "little ice age". Cooling changes are always times of stress on world populations. Warming changes are times of expansion and growth. I believe in climate change and thank God I was born during a warming change.

Randy Chapman

Just think Gary, if we were living in the little ice age, we could go the "mountain" at the landfill just east of Alvin and have snow skiing without having to travel!!

I too agree that we are living in a warming cycle...it's proven by plants we now grow here that we couldn't 50 years ago and tropical fish species that are much more common along the east and west coasts. How many Mangrove Snapper were caught years ago? Not very many, and that's just one example.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/samlemonick/2017/09/29/scientists-underestimated-how-bad-cow-farts-are/
Just consider this excerpt...
"Animal farts and poop are major contributors to global warming. It turns out we might have been underestimating just how much. New research finds that previous estimates of methane emissions from livestock were off by as much as 10%. The new calculations take into account changes in the ways people are using and keeping livestock.
Methane is a natural byproduct of digestion, made by that microbes in an animal’s gut that breakdown and ferment the food we eat. A gas, methane is a principle component of farts, though it’s not the one that makes them smell—sulfur-containing molecules are the biggest culprit there."

Robert Braeking

Drive by the landfill near the dog track some still early morning when the ground fog is hanging low. Talk about methane!

Carol Dean

I am finding it hard to believe that there are STILL people out there who are believing the Global Warming hoax!

George Croix

ONE major volcanic eription should pretty much cancel out all the puny efforts of Man to impact the atmosphere.

Methane?

Again, how big was that Antarctic ozone hole before anyone had a way to know it was even there.......

Global warming and climate change are both normal. Global cooling and climate change are both normal. Our problem is politicians (progressives) figured out a way to gain wealth and power by claiming they are not normal and that they know how to deal with them. The ignorant and poorly educated fall prey to their lies. Educate yourself. In the search bar on your computer enter "climate change or Little Ice age/ medieval warm period. Learn something instead of believing the hype of people wanting your wealth.

George Croix

Hey, it increased Al Gore's net worth by about a hundred million....of course, he's still living in a HUGE house and still limo-ing hither and yon and still private jetting....let the 'little people' take the hit for their quasi-religion of pending global catastrophe.
He really tells it like it ain't, and STILL has legions of acolytes, all afraid not to be afraid of something.....
Personally, I think it's mostly....mostly...... just an extension of the 'America is bad' thought process....
You'll notice, too, that Barack 'Kioto' Obama didn't waste any time dumping his climate religion to buy a big 'ol house and jet all over the planet.......
Talk it, but don't walk it.....typical.....

Bryan Manuele

Hey how come you guys are using the second coming as a rational too. These equivalency arguments are so embarrassing. Mr. Driscol you may be right you may be misguided who can predict if there will be a future altogether. But understanding, sensitivity and compassion are not easy to come by especially when people aren't even trying.

George Croix

You figure the 'global warming' folks are understanding, sensitive, and compassionate?

Interesting.......

Bryan Manuele

In response to the readers question, I must first say the reader hasn't made clear which global warming folks is being referred to. Secondly I have re-read my post and I could not discern any inference to exactly whom might exhibit such characteristics, However, I think the reader has raised a potentially interesting question, can it be determined which demographic has the greater tendency to have and exhibit such values.

George Croix

In response to the answerers answer, it was a great non-answer.....[beam][whistling]
