During the 1918-1919 pandemic, wearing masks was mandated in San Francisco. A group of protesters, some citing the constitutionality of the mandate, were known as the Anti-Mask League. Same arguments then as now. https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2020/04/29/pence-face-mask-coronavirus-1918-flu

"That you can't burn something — even in a burn area — on a no-burn day?" If the fire is small enough that no one notices, nor cares, yes.

Jim Forsythe

What would be so important that you would need to violate a burn ban by setting a fire in times of no-burn orders?

You can get away with anything if no one sees you, but it is still illegal if illegal to start with.

The attitude of let me see if I can get away with it is counterproductive to making sure everyone is safe in times of extremes.

Doing things such as burning when not legal, can lead to violence between neighbors.

Carlos Ponce

"What would be so important that you would need to violate a burn ban by setting a fire in times of no-burn orders?" myriad of reasons, TIME being one.

Jim Forsythe

What would you have that needs burning, that could not wait?

This is, let me have what I want and I do not care what happens to other's, attitude.

Do you truly believe laws do not apply to you?

If you have never had to fight a fire that was burning acres of grassland, set by a careless person, I can see why you would think, no big deal.

Rules about burning are made for a reason, to protect people and land from unnecessary death and destruction.

Bailey Jones

Obeying laws that cause a minor inconvenience just to benefit others isn't really a conservative value, Jim.

Donna Spencer

That's not a smart comment.

Diane Turski

Setting fires in defiance of a burn ban also risks causing a wildfire. People have been prosecuted and convicted for the devastating results of those wildfires.

Carlos Ponce

They burn, no devastation.

Jim Forsythe

Burn bans do not say if you can cause no devastation to go ahead and burn.

They do say if you burn you may be fined or placed in jail.

To try and get around rules is saying, I do not care about what happens to others!

Is this what your church teaches you?

Carlos Ponce

People do it all the time, Jim. They confine it to an inconspicuous part of their property, limiting its size. It happens.

Carlos Ponce

Jim, during Mardi Gras Parades folks up and down Seawall Blvd are smoking Marijuana. Would Jim call the police since public weed smoking is against the law? They do say if you smoke you may be fined or placed in jail. To try and get around rules is saying, I do not care about what happens to others! Is this what your church teaches you?

Jim Forsythe

Just because others do not go by the rules, does not mean it is legal for you to do so. if people are doing it on an inconspicuous part of their property, they know it is wrong. It up to a person to do what is right and if they do not, they are flaunting the rules. If you were burning next to me when a burn ban is in effect, we would have a personal talk, ending with you putting out the fire.

You are the one that has to answer to a higher power.

Keith Gray

Lots of laws that won't, can't or difficult to enforce. How's that texting enforcement going?

Jim Forsythe

Burn bans will be enforced by law officials.

Jose' Boix

The debate continues and I am still looking for the YES or NO to the question: Is it constitutionally legally to demand the use of PPEs, stay home, close businesses, etc. How is it that we can have such divergent positions between Galveston County Judge and Harris County Judge? Both seem to have expert legal advise though poles apart? Perhaps it is time for our State Highest Court to get active. Just my thoughts.

JD Arnold

Thank you Mr. Boix. The same state government that wants to open the economy and get people back to work again also has a psa on tv with Mathew McConaghy urging people to stay home. Confusing isn't it.
