The National Rifle Association has 5 million members out of the estimated 200 million U.S. electorate population. Five-hundred and thirty-seven federal officials and our entire political system is controlled by a mere 2.5 percent of the public that elected them.

Every one of those 537 representatives is afraid of receiving a failing grade or having counter-campaign advertising directed against them in an upcoming race. It has crippled the political process perhaps more than any other single issue that historically define the two party system.

I own guns. I support the Second Amendment and the principles behind the NRA, but I absolutely detest the effect that NRA lobbying has on our political process. NRA support will be the single litmus test for my choice in candidates moving forward. It is time for the 97.5 percent of Americans to say it is not OK for the NRA to speak on our behalf, scare us, or feed lobbying dollars to shill candidates.

Why push back against the NRA?
Was an NRA member responsible for any of the shootings? Asides from the GOOD SAMARITAN who shot the church killer making him drop his weapon the answer is NO.
Does the NRA condone killing? Asides from killing in self defense, protection of loved ones and killing deer, etc for food the answer is NO. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in 1967 "The right to defend one's home and one's person when attacked has been guaranteed through the ages by common law."
The NRA does promote your Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
Would you push back against any group which promoted your Constitutional Right to Freedom of Speech?
Freedom of Religion?
Freedom to Assemble?
Any freedom found in the Bill of Rights?
As far as "lobbying", the NRA is a minuscule part of those who lobby. The US Chamber of Commerce spends more on lobbying than any other group spending $82,190,000 in 2017 alone. The NRA doesn't even fall into the group as a top lobby or biggest spenders who lobby.
https://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/top.php?showYear=2017&indexType=s
Here's the list of the most effective Washington DC lobbyist. No one representing the NRA is on the list.

If you don't like them, don't join their group. That's your freedom.
Gandhi (known as a peaceful man) wrote in his autobiography:
“Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest. If we want the Arms Act to be repealed, if we want to learn the use of arms, here is a golden opportunity. If the middle classes render voluntary help to Government in the hour of its trial, distrust will disappear, and the ban on possessing arms will be withdrawn.” – Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments with Truth (1948)
Gandhi would side with the NRA.

How about pushing back on moral decay and social breakdown of the family as perpetuated by the left. Why does know one hold Hollywood and the media responsible? How many murders does the average moviegoer see in 15 years? How many video games portray murder and crime mayhem? How about the media making it a huge story to only be copied, just to sell some airtime or newspapers? Push back on the NRA (which are by and large, law abiding Americans)..., the fact that the NRA is even mentioned is a joke.

isn"t it amazing that so many like the poster can't understand what really went wrong in Parkland. Wants more regulations when the one we have were ignored. Gee get a life.

Diane Turski

I agree it is time for thoughtful voters to push back against the out sized influence of the current NRA, which supports gun manufacturers' profits over the lives of U.S. citizens! The best way to do that right now is to vote out the cowards in Congress who are supporting the slaughter of innocent civilians by continuing to allow weapons of war to be sold and carried everywhere by everyone! I urge everyone to vote for common sense candidates who are not bought and paid for by the NRA!!

Gary Miller

Diane! We own the NRA. 2.5 % of gun owners is over half of all voters. Voters, not money is what gives the NRA it's power. Some individual Democrats give more than the NRA.The NRA offers ideas, liberals sell hate and buy dependents.

Diane Turski

Nonsense!

Carlos Ponce

"back against the out sized influence of the current NRA"
Did Diane BOTHER to look up my links to see that the NRA really is a small player and not really that influential as Washington lobbyists go? Doubt it! Typical Liberal!!
"weapons of war"???? An army armed with the firearms used by civilians would not fare well in a war. I hope Diane is just using hyperbole and not really ignorant about firearms as her post appears.

Kelly Naschke

That would have required Dianne to think for herself...and as she routinely demonstrates, that isn't a possibility. I am starting to think she gets her news from "The View". I can almost see her nodding her head in approval with anything and everything that Joy the Joke Behar and Whoopie the Clown Goldberg say.

Doyle Beard

don't bet the farm on it Carlos

Diane Turski

I have found when considering the source that your links don't have much credibility. Considering the source is always a wise choice before believing what you read.

What progressive leftists like you Diane will never understand is that the NRA has nothing to do with the slaughter of the children. If truth were to be told with the left they would have to acknowledge that they were the ones who set up these killings with their so called Gun Free Zones, where only criminals and the police are allowed to have guns. In Parkland you had 1 criminal with a gun slaughtering away, while you had 4 so called armed policemen outside hiding behind their cars afraid to go in and take this kid on.
You squawk about the slaughtering of the innocent yet progressive leftists say nothing about the slaughtering of the innocent upon the altar of convenience that they call "Choice".... Over 53 million of those innocents were slaughtered before the progressive Obama made the government STOP counting the slaughter back in 2009 and at the rate that they were going it is well over 62 million. What do you say about all of these innocent lives Diane? What about the undo influence that the Planned Parent Hood has over the progressive side of Congress.... I do not here you or your kind wailing about getting rid of them. Why is killing some children Ok in the progressive eyes and killing of others is abhorrent?
One group the NRA actually does not promote the slaughtering of the innocent, the other Planned Parent Hood does actively promote the slaughtering of the innocent. Not for sure why you are on the side of Planned Parent Hood, but it seems that you progressives speak out of both sides of your mouths....

Diane Turski

Apples and Oranges again! I really wish you would try educating yourself on the current NRA so you could speak with more credibility.

Gary Miller

Diane? Gov.estimates 300 million guns, I estimate twice as many. Most guns have never been registered. Most of guns are for sale. 250 million citizens own those guns. 5 million NRA members is 2.5 % of gun owners. Most of the 250 million gun owners are NRA voters. Almost 100 million citizens are not gun owners. People like you are the oddballs. Do you really expect 250 million of us to make the same mistake you make?

Don Bette

"our entire political system is controlled by a mere 2.5 percent of the public that elected them"....REALLY, Greg? The ENTIRE system? We might just as well put an end to this useless voting system, then!

Gary Miller

Don! 5 million NRA members do not control 200 million voters. 2.5 % of gun owners represent half of voters. Government estimates say citizens own more than 300 million legal guns. Only 2.5 % are NRA members but over half of gun owners vote with the NRA.

"I want to thank the Lord for our Constitution. I also want to thank the NRA for its legacy. The National Rifle Association was started, founded by religious leaders who wanted to protect freed slaves from the Ku Klux Klan." - Harry Alford, president and chief executive officer of the D.C.-based National Black Chamber of Commerce.
"Robert Franklin Williams obtained a charter from the National Rifle Association and set up a rifle club to defend blacks in Jonesboro from Ku Klux Klan or other attackers."
"Alarmed at the threat to civil rights activists, Williams had applied to the National Rifle Association (NRA) for a charter for a local rifle club. He called the Monroe Chapter of the NRA the Black Armed Guard; it was made up of about 50–60 men, including some veterans like him. They were determined to defend the local black community from racist attacks, a goal similar to that of the Deacons for Defense who established chapters in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in 1964-1965."

Hey Kelly, I have noticed lately that when you attack me personally you remove the "reply" option. That is behaving as a cowardly bully. What are you so afraid of?

Kelly Naschke

Sounds like user error Diane. I welcome your replies and actually look forward to them. Maybe you aren’t doing something right?

Diane Turski

Nice try, but I see the reply button is back again now. Coincidence?

Before blaming the NRA for all gun violence, one needs to find out what the citizens of Great Britain and Australia think of the banning of all guns in those countries. Even the criminals are able to obtain them. Banning guns is not the solution. It would be like banning food because people are overweight or obese. I think the fault lies with kids not being held accountable for their actions and behavior. Is this learned from their parents? Is it because in today's society, kids are not taught right from wrong? Is it because too many kids are being given medicines at such young ages, for whatever reason? Is it because kids are so utterly spoiled and are not taught what it takes to live as an adult? I remember growing up and the first thing you heard just before the 10 pm news came on was, "it's 10 pm, do you know where your children are?" I see now how relevant that was. Maybe the networks need to go back to that. Just my thoughts too early in the morning.
