The big new year question for the remaining Republicans in Congress is “What now?”

What will the GOP do to minimize their upcoming losses in 2020 with President Donald Trump still in office? The voters in 2018 spoke loudly with the GOP losing 40 seats in Congress. In Texas there was an 180 percent increase in voting from the last midterm election causing a huge blue wave to wash across every part of the state.

All indications show the 2020 elections will be worse — unless they take swift, decisive action. Here’s a suggested three-part plan for the floundering party of conservatives.

Phase 1: Pass a bill to fund the remaining parts of the government with funding for the Department of Homeland Security, but no wall. Trump has already said he would accept a fence. Give him $1.8 billion for DHS and let them rebuild or repair the existing fence with a steel slat barrier. Trump will declare victory or he will be shamed by the right-wing media and veto the bill. Congress will have to override his veto knowing that once they turn on the president they lose the 35 percent Trump base. At this point, it’s either face the 35 percent in the primary or the 65 percent in the general election.

Phase 2: Remove Trump from office. Vice President Mike Pence is a right-wing, religious zealot — but he isn’t nuts! He isn’t politically ignorant. He knows how to run a government. Pence would bring stability to the country and world. He would have a hard time explaining why he will overturn the policies he has supported while vice president, but he can — and must do it. The only people at this point who would not accept Pence are the extreme right-wing Trump supporters. Our country needs Pence. The stock market needs Pence. Our allies need Pence. The GOP desperately needs Pence.

Trump can be removed by impeachment, but the Republicans should be forced to file the articles of impeachment and carry the ball. Trump is their problem. They created him and allowed him to fester by not performing their duties as the third part of government. The Senate wouldn’t have to remove him. He would quit and blame it on everyone except himself.

Phase 3: Continue to probe into Trump and his family. The GOP must wash this stain out of their party. Continue the probe and demand the rule of law to be applied. At least look like the GOP is the party of law and order by upholding the rule of law, for once, instead of applying the law based upon who rules.

If the GOP wants to survive the upcoming elections they will need to grow a pair or lose them in 2020. At this point, I would gladly accept Pence as president.

Poor John. Still wasting away in Liberalville. But it's your right to express your thoughts. And when Trump is re-elected in 2020, it will be nostalgic to look back on this guest column and how none of it came to fruition. It will also be funny!
The wall will be built. Call it a fence if you like. Wall, fence, barrier .... call it whatever you want. One of the plus points for prototype design was the ability to see what is on the other side. That's what the border agents wanted. The approved design could not be scaled by members of the elite military special forces. "Wall" was just the word used to convey the concept of a physical barrier. And it will have a nice entry way to allow travelers and immigrants in - LEGALLY. But a physical barrier isn't the only thing in the works if properly funded. Electronic scanning by cameras, drones, thermal imaging, satellites is also included.
Trump will never be impeached. If Democrats do as they have suggested and pursue this endeavor which will not benefit Americans it will be to their detriment.
Don't worry about Pence. he'll get his chance following Trump's second term.
As for your column - haters gotta hate. Trump haters were calling for his removal before he even took the oath of office.
Recount the votes - that gave Trump MORE votes.
Convince the Electoral College to change their commitments - It didn't happen.
All the investigations have turned up nothing against Trump, not even Mueller's. But the report isn't out you say. It would have leaked out by now if they had found anything. Team Mueller needs severe plumbing help.
If Democrats do as you suggest, it's their right but the voters will take note .
Thank God I live in Galveston County and Texas. Texas will not turn blue anytime soon - perhaps not even in my lifetime. Vote Democrat all you want. It doesn't matter. Democrats won NO Galveston County elections in 2018. Democrats won NO statewide elections in 2018.

Jim Forsythe

It doesn't matter what you and I think or even the border agents.
What matters are the people in the House, Senate and the President.
Since Trump has become President how many miles of new, not replacement wall has been built?
How many miles of wall do you think will be built in the next two years?

Carlos Ponce

"or even the border agents."
You sound like a previous president who never asked those on the front line what they needed.
New wall is being built at the same time old barbed wire fencing is being replaced so it's hard to tell how much "new" has been built.

Jim Forsythe

Carlos , the reason you can not find how many miles of new fence has been built is because it has not been funded. This year a few miles has been approved. This is after 2 years.
It may be time for him to focus on another way of protecting the border as funding may not happen any time soon.
Despite Republican majorities in both houses of Congress, lawmakers have not approved wall funding. In 2017, the president managed to secure about $1.6 billion for border protection projects, but they are primarily for fortifying existing border fencing, not expanding the current wall.
This may be the new fence that has been approved.
A 6-mile "levee wall system" is set for construction in Texas's Rio Grande Valley beginning in February 2019. It will cost $145 million.

Tinfoil on sale again?

It should be a crime for anyone to say our President is nuts.at the least GDN shouldn't print it. It's the same as cursing to prove a point. It's an unintelligent person that makes
Illiterate remarks like this. Just my thoughts.

Jim Forsythe

The standard you want to set has been gone for some time. Trump himself said some bad things about a President. Nuts is tame compared to some of the statements below.

1. Trump started out by saying that Obama was not born in the United States
2. ‘President Obama has been the most ignorant president in our history’ Trump also said Obama was clueless.
3. ‘He has been a disaster’
4. Trump called the president the ‘founder of ISIS’

Carlos Ponce

Jim, do I have to explain "political rhetoric" to you again? [rolleyes]

Jim Forsythe

Trump was not running for office when he first started fixating about the Obama was not born in the USA theory. It can not be political rhetoric, unless you are running for a office.
For years Trump propagated the theory that Obama was born outside the U.S., and thus not eligible to be president. Obama released his birth certificate in 2011 to quell the theory.

Carlos Ponce

Barack Hussein Obama was not born in the United States. He was born in Kenya. That is a FACT. His son, Barack Hussein Obama II has a Hawaiian birth certificate. So if Trump said Barack Hussein Obama was not born in the United States he was right. Junior was. But He never said Barack Hussein Obama II or Barack Hussein Obama Jr. weren't born in the USA, did he??????

Carlos Ponce

And political rhetoric can come from ANYBODY, whether they're running for office or not. Jim Forsythe spouts Political rhetoric also.

Jim Forsythe

Carlos, you know very well that he was talking about the President and not his Father or Grandfather.

“Crime”? The First Amendment says hello.

Emile Pope

First amendment anyone?

Casey Alan

Phase 4: vote a new president in. Preferably a Democrat. Anybody but Trump or his henchmen. Trumps base will never change their mind. He could put them out on the streets begging for food, shelter and clothing and they will never change their mind about him.

Carlos Ponce

You can try. Who do you want, Casey? Bernie Beto, anybody with a D?
You can run anybody. Trump will be re-elected.

David Robertson

Who do you suggest? Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Gary Miller

AO-C isn't eledgible. 6 years too young, a lifetime too dumb.

Carlos Ponce

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born on October 13, 1989 making her too young to run for president of the United States in 2020. Let her speak. She's put her foot in her mouth more times than Joe Biden - not an easy task.

Steve Fouga

If I were a Democratic strategist, I would do everything I could to ensure Trump was still president at the time of the 2020 elections. This would give them the best chance of taking the Senate and the presidency, and expanding their House majority.

Pence, on the other hand, would allow the GOP a year or so of normalcy, enough to shore up their message ahead of the elections. Too risky; they might just get their act together. No, the Dems should play the Trump card for all it's worth for the next 2 years.

George Croix

So many short, and/or selective' memories, of proven crimes and worse failures, but all of those delivered with a smile and a pat on the back that made the knife going in feel so much better...let me be both slick and clear about that......

Phase 5....grow up..........

Jarvis Buckley

For the sake of our country I hope President Trump is our President until 2024.

Randy Chapman

Ol Johnny fails to mention the Senate gained Republican seats. Guess who lost Senate seats? And impeachment? Puleeze!

Jim Forsythe

Randy, if Trump is impeached it would be by the House? Removal would be done by the Senate which would require 66 votes. That is the reason no President has ever been removed from office because it was made difficult for a reason.
Another way of removal is through the 25th Amendment.
Also a President can voluntarily step aside like Nixon did.

Randy Chapman

Jim, I was alluding to that in a round-about way. Both houses are required, but I don't think many Democrats even know what impeachment actually is, and how hard it is to actually get done. To most, it's just a buzz-word they've heard other Democrats talk about, and of course on CNN and MSNBC.

George Croix

If the author will send me his email address I'll have my soon-to-be 8 year old granddaughter send him one back on how impeachment works, to be successful.....
First clue: It starts, properly, with some proof of an impeachable act committed, which does not include the hissy fits pitched by political opposites........
Lying? Impeachable?
No, but, if so, maybe we should have 'impeached' the last President for lying about 4 dead Americans, or 'health insurance', or 'the JV', or 'the Gentle Giant', or..............
C'mon....simple derangement is one thing.
Going further than that is, well, you know................

Kelly Naschke

More Trump Deragement Syndrome.

"What will the GOP do to minimize their upcoming losses in 2020 with President Donald Trump still in office? "
John do you use a crystal ball, tarot cards or seances with supernatural forces to make your political predictions?

Steve Fouga

Carlos, I bet a brief look at midterm results prompted John to ask this question.

Carlos Ponce

A brief look at the midterms showed the Republican Party did not lose as much as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama's Democratic parties lost in their first midterm. In fact Republicans GAINED in the Senate. Typically the party in power loses big time in mid-term. The 40 House seats lost and the gain in the Senate was not typical.

Emile Pope

Only because of gerrymandering and voter suppression from the repubs...

Carlos Ponce

Proof? I know you can never provide it because it does not exist. And the rantings of a person who lost an election is NOT proof - it's sour grapes.

Steve Fouga

LOL, Carlos. It was a blowout. I wonder if all conservatives are as overconfident as you. If so, 2020 will see another Democratic steamroller.

Of course, there's every chance the Dems won't be able to get their act together well enough to challenge. Repubs are always better organized.

Carlos Ponce

"LOL, Carlos. It was a blowout."
Blowout? This must be joke. It's New Year's Eve, not April Fools Day.
Galveston County Democrat wins = 0.
Texas statewide Democrat wins = 0.
Nationwide Democrats took just 40 House seats, 0 Senate seats. In fact they LOST Senate seats. Now compare that to the number of seats lost by Democrats in the 1994 and 2010 Midterms. NOW THAT was a "blowout".
But keep on thinking the way you're thinking. Texas Governor Windy Davis and Senator Beaten O'Rourke would agree with you. Oh, that's right. THEY LOST, TOO! [beam]
This from the man who THINKS he's a moderate. [tongue]

Jim Forsythe

Democrats won all four major Harris County offices on Election Day and swept the county’s two dozen district judgeships.

Carlos Ponce

Toss in Liberal Travis County while you're at it. Harris County like its main city Houston doesn't concern me. No Republican mayor since Jim McConn in 1982.
But state wide Texas races were all won by Republicans.

Steve Fouga

I'll even go out on a limb and say the 2018 midterms were the most consequential ever, because of what the Dems are about to do to the Trump presidency.

Carlos Ponce

Let them try. I predict you will hear massive hyperbole from anything they think they find. Their aim is not to impeach but put the idea into voter's minds that there's something impeachable there.
"Oh no! he used the wrong fork! Should we impeach him?"

George Croix

Lest we forget, REVERSING all done for the last 2 years is the Left's goal.
i suppose if one preferred the previous Admin.'s direction, that is a good thing.
For others, not so much.....
Perhaps the newly strengthened Senate majority will have a thing or to to interject into the mix of that law and/or order overturning thingy......
Perhaps.....

Jarvis Buckley

2019 going to be a great year for republicans & our Country. We are going to get a lot of the wall funded.
Democrats going to show publicly just how petty they are. Although most of us already know. They are clueless & just spew hated & try to take Trump down with help from MSM. Run Beto Run. What a joke.
In my opinion.

George Croix

There are calendars with Thought for the Day and Quote for the Day.
What's needed is one with Excuse for the Day.
It would sell like hotcakes is selected areas.....

Steve Fouga

This is actually a really good idea. It would sell like hotcakes everywhere. 😎👍

George Croix

I've already got the multiple demographics chosen as target consumers.
All I need now, is a lot more money than I have..............
