Bravo Sir, well put. I wonder why the Open borders group have locked doors on their houses, after all by their way of thinking these people need to come here and need a place to stay so why are they supporting them....This used to be a nation of laws, but for some reason the democrats and their press corp, the MSM hate the law and want to see it abolished....

Emile Pope

Nauseating drivel filled with too many falsehoods to mention. The only thing this article excels in is fearmongering. But then again that's what the right wing thrives on...

Mike Meador

Carlos Ponce

There are no falsehoods in Judge Holbrook's column.

Wayne D Holt

Well, make it easy on yourself then. Take the three worst specific falsehoods in the piece and explain why they are false. Should be a piece of cake if they're there. Hint: they're not.

Illegal is illegal is illegal. No hand waving or pearl clutching will change that. What the Democrat leadership is promoting would mean the world could be at our door and we would have no right to stop them coming in. Brilliant plan...if you want to recreate Biafra here.

Another easy one for you, Emile. Which country on Planet Earth has such an entry policy? Who has unrestricted entry and benefits for those who broke the law to come? We'll wait...but remember, Christmas is coming up soon so I'll need to leave by then.

The closest you'll find are countries who offer so-called economic entry, where the entrant brings certain minimum--but significant--amount of money in to start a business. The places that have allowed relaxed standards for entry are the ones like Sweden, Italy, Germany and the UK that are experiencing problems they've never had before with assimilation, crime and the unraveling of their native social structures.

My Italian grandfather came in by way of Ellis Island in New York at the age of 17. He could have been turned around at the port and sent back with no appeal, no benefits and no right to vote here. Instead, he worked his way up from a runner on Wall Street to become the owner of a successful insurance brokerage. But he started the right way--by being here with the permission of the government of his new home country.

Emile Pope

How many Black runners were there on Wall Street?

Miceal O'Laochdha

That is just a throw-away line that cheapens the discourse Emile. Italian immigrants, like the Irish, were treated to strident bigotry and were restricted from decent employment opportunities and living conditions at various stages of this great American experiment. Great news: historically, black folks were not alone in being treated with cruelty by their fellow humans, nor were they alone in suffering the horrors of slavery. Any immigrant story of overcoming poverty and disadvantage by hard work, and improving the conditions of themselves and their descendants is a hopeful story of the American dream being more than a pipedream and as such, is worthy of respect.

Emile Pope

Let's see...a person not born in America comes to this country and is given the opportunity for a job that was denied to an entire race of people born here. If he worked his way up from the bottom, then where were the people not even considered for the position? "Nor were they alone in suffering the horrors of slavery"? That statement is too ridiculous for response. The Rosenberg Library I hear is doing renovations. Perhaps you should stop by and see the improvements and perhaps partake in some of the reading material provided there...

Miceal O'Laochdha

Emile, I hope playing the eternal victim works well for you but, I really doubt that it will. As to your ignorance of anyone other than black people in America suffering from enslavement, you may have to expand your research beyond the Rosenberg Library in Galveston (although it is a very fine institution) to correct this blank spot in your grasp of history. It might lead you to have concern and compassion for others, and appreciation of the obstacles that others have overcome.

Emile Pope

Perhaps you can cite documentation of white people in America being enslaved. When, where, and how would be acceptable...

Miceal O'Laochdha

White people enslaved in America? What in the he!! are you talking about Emile? America is known for its past enslavement of black people (and current enslavement of immigrant sex workers of several races). Home countries of immigrants to America have been known for past enslavement of all races. I am just encouraging you to show a modicum of respect for the hardship and ultimately successful stories of more than one group of Americans.

Emile Pope

Since you have shown yourself unable to answer any of the questions posed, please consider this discussion concluded...

Ray Taft

Illegal immigrants present significant national security and public safety threats to the United States. They have a severely negative impact on the nation’s taxpayers at the local, state, and national levels. Illegal immigration costs Americans billions of dollars each year. Illegal aliens are net consumers of taxpayer-funded services, and the limited taxes paid by some segments of the illegal alien population are, in no way, significant enough to offset the growing financial burdens imposed on U.S. taxpayers by massive numbers of illegal immigrants.

The United States must adopt an immigration system that serves the national interest. One that restores the rule of law and secures our borders. America needs to protect American workers. We need to end chain migration, eliminate the Visa Lottery, and move the country to a merit-based entry system. These reforms will advance the safety and prosperity of all Americans while helping new legal citizens assimilate and flourish.

President Trump is fighting to secure our border. President Trump has worked to get other countries in the region to step up and do their part to address this crisis.

Do-nothing Democrats do nothing about the crisis on our border. Democrats want open borders. Democrat presidential cant-idates even go to Mexico to campaign. Democrats love illegal immigration and hate America. The open-border Democrats are a pitiful lot.

Let’s hope and work to insure America ousts Democrats everywhere this election. Let’s put an end to the Democrats’ many abuses of the American people so that we can secure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for Americans first. And be sure to vote for Trump2020.

Charles Douglas

Wait! Wait Mr. Taft! Just wait a second please. The LEFT knows how to do some things. Let me think! Okay, they know how to run counter-intelligence operations and spy networķs against Americans, along with forging legal documents and covering up evidence by lying ten ways to Sunday ( SHIFTY SCHIFF )...in order to oust a duely elected American President. I wonder....should we count that?

Emile Pope

Vomiting outright falsehoods and disproven Republican talking points to appeal to fearful uninformed people is a proven right wing tactic...

Carlos Ponce

Vomiting outright falsehoods and disproven talking points to appeal to fearful uninformed people - sounds like Schiff to the rest of us!

Dan Freeman

Judge Holbrook the following corrections to your column should be made:

1. You assert “More than half of all Harris County school children are non-English speaking.” This is incorrect and should reflect that in 2018 the Bureau of the Census reported that only 43.7% of Harris County Household spoke a language other than English at home. It follows that more than half only speak English.

2. He asserts without evidence “… most Democrats now want open borders….” As reported by Vox: “Contrary to what Trump says about Democrats, none of them actually support an “open borders” policy.”

3. Judge Holbrook claims “If you were born in the United States or apply legally and are accepted, you’re a citizen. If not, you cannot come here.” Merely applying legally does not confer citizenship. Moreover, apparently, Judge Holbrook does not recognize the millions of legal immigrants who have work permits, but have not applied for citizenship. Most probably will not in the current political climate, but they remain legally in the country.

4. He asserts “The Bible says and I believe that there is only one way to heaven. You believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God or you don’t. If you believe, then you’re in. If not, you’re not in.” Judge Holbrook, a former Senior Warden of the Episcopal Church, apparently has rejected the 21st century teachings of his church, which emphasizes pluralism and diversity.

Carlos Ponce

1. "2018 the Bureau of the Census reported that only 43.7% of Harris County Household spoke a language other than English at home" Now if each household provides only ONE child to Harris County Schools you might be onto something. If only a portion of the 43.7% households have more than one child, Judge Holbrook is right.

2. "Contrary to what Trump says about Democrats, none of them actually support an 'open borders' policy." - VOX must be kidding. Their policy proclamations; abolish ICE, no border walls, take down walls in place, not to arrest illegals, sanctuary cities all point to open borders even though they steer away from the term.

3. Dan printed the Judges' words "and are accepted" but apparently does not understand them. I suggest Dan talk with the illegals and legals with a work permit. Most don't want US citizenship. They want to make money here and then return to their patria where American dollars go a long way.

4. Looks like the Judge believes in the Bible. "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me'."

Charles Douglas

Amen Mr. PONCE! I could tell everyone a few stories about several people who thought they knew better than God about heaven and hell.On their death beds, they were allowed to speak what they saw with their last seconds here. To nobody's surprise, what they saw was no different than what folks were trying to get them to believe years before it was to late. Once you get to hell there is only one way out! The Great White Throne Judgement! I have to tell you, there is no DUE PROCESS IN THAT ROOM, AND IF GO THERE... YOU ARE THE GUILTY ...awaiting transfer to the Lake Of Fire! For the record, The Lake is a place where the FIRE is not quenched and the worm dieth not! It is seven time hotter than hell. Mercy and Grace will be restrained from entering that room with you! Please don't get caught up, dont get deceived! Nobody sends an individual to hell! Those who ends up there are those who were willing to go. I would not wish that fate on my worst enemy!

Jim Forsythe

Foreign born person, Galveston County- 9.8%

Foreign born person, Harris County- 26%

"2018 the Bureau of the Census reported that only 20.1% of Galveston County Household spoke a language other than English at home" does nor mean that they do not know how to speak English , just that they prefer tp speak another language at home.

"2018 the Bureau of the Census reported that only 43.7% of Harris County ousehold spoke a language other than English at home"

An open border is a border that enables free movement of people (and often of goods) between jurisdictions with few or no restrictions on movement, that is lacking substantive border control.

President Trump has falsely claimed at least two dozen times since taking office that Democrats want to open American borders. But legislation shows that Democrats support border security measures, though not the border wall he wants to build.

In fact, the vast majority of Americans—including most Democrats—don’t believe in so-called “open borders.” That’s not to say that no one believes in open borders. Certainly, there are people who do. But most don’t. And open borders is not a policy the Democratic party supports; it’s not part of their platform. Regardless of how many times Trump and his supporters may claim otherwise.

In 2010, Obama signed a bill designating $600 million to fund 1,500 new Border Patrol agents, customs inspectors, and law enforcement officials along our border with Mexico. He ordered 1,200 National Guard troops to the border. And he oversaw the development of a virtual fence, utilizing surveillance sensors, radar, cameras, and drones, which would span 1,300 miles of our border at a projected cost of almost $7 billion. . These are hardly the actions of an “open borders” president.

Hillary Clinton supported putting billions of dollars toward border enforcement, updated surveillance equipment, and 20,000 more border agents. Does that sound like an “open borders” policy? She did support paths to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. That’s still not an open borders policy.

Carlos Ponce

Jim, being foreign born does not necessarily equate with speaking a language other than English at home.

A person born in England, Australia, parts of Canada, etc. moving into Texas speak English, don't they?

And being born in the USA does not guarantee that English is spoken at home. While growing up, English wasn't spoken at my home. As a teacher I was occasionally asked to translate for parents who spoke little English. But their children were born in the USA.

And you try to convince us Democrats don't want open borders...... Riiiiight.... While they steer away from the term because of negative polling on that phrase but insist on:

Amnesty for illegal immigrants

No border walls/fences/barriers

Removing walls/fences/barriers in place

No detention for those crossing without an entry visa

Eliminating ICE - AOC says "We can replace it with a humane agency that is directed towards safe passage..."

To anyone with brains this means OPEN BORDERS. DUH!

"Yes, Democrats Are Now The Party Of Open Borders"

Gary Scoggin

I don’t think AOC speaks for the majority of Democrats. As much as many Republicans would like to think otherwise.

Carlos Ponce

Many followers of the Squad do - and they're Democrats. But remember that she got her ideas and supports the Bernie.

Jose' Boix

As I see it, we can't even enforce rules we have. So we keep developing different and more rules; none that we can enforce. The vicious cycle continues and rather than fixing the situation, it just gets worst. I was blessed and fortunate to have a straight forward process - one that had enforcement as I can attest - and one that has a defined end point; citizenship! For me it just took from 1960 to 1969, and I am thankful.

Dan Freeman

Mr. Ponce:

1. I at least found some evidence, something notably free from your defense of Judge Holbrook’s screed. If you go to TEA, you and he can confirm my summary.

2. Vox is not kidding. But no evidence from you, just GOP talking points.

3. I employed many people with work permits. They had a range of feelings about the U.S. Most did not “return to their patria.” They came from diverse lands. Some stayed and some moved to other countries when Trump was elected. Apparently you make stuff up about people do not like you.

4. The Bible is complicated. That quote appears in the Gospel of John, which was written nearly 70 years after the death of Jesus. No such statement is found in the authentic letters of Paul or in the first three gospels. I suspect Jesus was more loving than Mr. Ponce or Judge Holbrook.

You guys do give me a chuckle. Thanks for playing the game.

Carlos Ponce

1, I at least have common sense and repeat: 1. "2018 the Bureau of the Census reported that only 43.7% of Harris County Household spoke a language other than English at home" Now if each household provides only ONE child to Harris County Schools you might be onto something. If only a portion of the 43.7% households have more than one child, Judge Holbrook is right. If you don't understand it, go bck to grade school math.

2. No border walls, take down walls in place, not to arrest illegals, sanctuary cities all point to open borders even though they steer away from the term. That's called common sense.

3. Your source material is limited. Most don't want US citizenship. They want to make money here and then return to their patria where American dollars go a long way. That's a FACT. Of course they'll tell their jefe who hired them what he wants to hear.[whistling]

4. "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me'." That's very clear. If you don't understand it - that's a personal problem.

Dan Freeman

BTW I took my own advice and look up the percent of English Learners in Houston ISD: 32%, Aldine 34%, Alief 43%, Galvena Park 34%, La Porte 9.4%, Pasedena 28.9%. I guess you get the idea. EL is provided to all language groups, but probably not over 50% anywhere in Harris County.

Carlos Ponce

"Gospel of John, which was written nearly 70 years after the death of Jesus" Actually, scholars say the Gospel of John was written around the year 70 AD which would roughly be 40 years after Jesus died and rose from the dead. He was an eyewitness to what Jesus said and did. And John lived until around the year 100 AD.

Charles Douglas

I'm very glad that people like Mr. PONCE and I, by our boldness to quote and use the Word of God makes some people chuckle, in discuss and scorn. We as Christians are doing what we have been ordained to do, and if that make unbelievers and scorners CHUCKLE, then so be It! Keep scorning the Word, and scoffing and persecuting those who speaks it. I would recommend that the truth be believed. If you don't know what you DON'T know, YOU DON'T KNOW IT!!!!! I will also inform you that you can have more degrees than a thermometer, but you will never amount to be knee high to a FOOL where God is concerned, for there is not wisdom, counsel, nor understanding which will prevail against him. Now, let them who have eyes to see and ears to hear, SEE & HEAR THE WORD OF GOD: It does not matter what year Jesus died, all that mattered was that he died for the sins of All! See if you can wrap your mind around this; Jesus did not inspire scriptures GOD DID, AND GOD IS STILL ALIVE AND HE NEVER DIED!!! DO YOU HEAR ME? Want proof? Here you go: 2 Timothy 3: 16- 17 ( All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.) So stop trying to outsmart God, to do things your way. Doing things your way pertaining to salvation will get you a first class ticket to HELL! So now what have we learned here this evening? We learned that Mr. PONCE is, and was SPOT ON, because he accurately quoted the God inspired scriptures God inspired Jesus to say, and what he inspired John to repeat and print! I might also add that I did not intend to preach here today, but several of you are very close to blaspheming the Holy Ghost for which there is NO FORGIVENESS in this world nor in the world to come! Matthew 12: 31-32!!!! Somebody say OH MY or AMEN!!!

Mike Zeller

Emile Pope

He NEVER provides evidence. Just keeps repeating the same falsehoods and calls it verification. Or if he does provide a link it totally disproves his point. Oh well...

Carlos Ponce

Emile, are you posting about yourself again?[rolleyes]

Curtiss Brown

What Judge Holbrook didn't say was that Trump supports legal immigration. He doesn't. What is legal and what is illegal is what is in immigration law. But immigration law doesn't make you a criminal any more than an IRS fine or a parking ticket makes you a criminal. And what? No wall on the Northern border?

Carlos Ponce

Trump supports LEGAL immigration through vetting. That's why he called for a "wall" with a DOOR.

8 U.S.C. § 1326 - U.S. Code

"Any alien deported pursuant to section 1252(h)(2)  2 of this title who enters, attempts to enter, or is at any time found in, the United States (unless the Attorney General has expressly consented to such alien's reentry) shall be incarcerated for the remainder of the sentence of imprisonment which was pending at the time of deportation without any reduction for parole or supervised release.  Such alien shall be subject to such other penalties relating to the reentry of deported aliens as may be available under this section or any other provision of law."

The "wall" on the southern border is used to keep out sex traffickers, child traffickers, drug traffickers as well as illegal aliens. I'm certain that some of this goes on on the Northern border but not to extent as the Southern.

Gary Scoggin

“And some, I assume, are good people.”

Carlos Ponce

The good people, ONCE VETTED, will be let in the door.

Randy Chapman

A wall is not needed on the northern border. People are not sneaking through the northern woods into this country as criminals, drug smugglers, and bringing their diseases with them.

Mary Gillespie

When I lived abroad, I tried to be a good guest in my host country. I arrived legally with a visa and government permission to live there. I paid taxes, learned to drive their way, and volunteered in the community.

My passport was stamped "Without Recourse to Government Funds." I understood that if my family asked for a handout, we'd be sent home.

It should be the same here in the US.

Emile Pope

So you’re proposing that the immigration laws here be the same as in other countries?

Dalton Logan

Now you are catching on[beam]

Randy Chapman

Emile Pope

Perhaps you should learn the immigration policies of other countries first...
