"I never seen a Union soldier that I don’t want to grasp him by the hand and say I thank you from an honest heart."

What experiences he must have known - living through the greatest expansion in personal freedom in perhaps the whole of human history, only to have seen it evaporate a few years later. America made a promise to Richard Nelson, it's time we kept it.

I donated his marriage license from 1868 to the Galveston and Texas History Center. There is much more to his story.

The Galveston and Texas History Center that's part of the Rosenberg Library? I've got some civil war letters I need to give to a library or museum before me or they are gone. I'll check them out after they reopen.

Yes. They are open by appointment.

Virginia Point? I wonder if there are any photos of what was there. I guess one too many hurricanes took it’s toll on the place.

Rosenberg Library has acquired many treasures, thanks to the generosity of people like Samuel.

They have a lot of photos online. If you search for it here a photo of the signal house comes up. https://gthcenter.cuadra.com/starweb9/l.skca-catalog/servlet.starweb9
