On behalf of the Sea Star Base Galveston founders, board of directors, membership and staff, I would like to thank the community for their support in helping us achieve our 2017 goals.

Sea Star Base Galveston is proud of our growth and achievement in fulfilling our mission as a high adventure marine and maritime destination, offering aquatic programs that instill lifetime leadership, teamwork skills and independence in body, mind and spirit.

Through the generosity of foundations, corporations, sponsors and members, we have had the opportunity to offer STEM to Stern programs aboard the BaySmart Express to hundreds of students, camp and learning experiences to Sea Scouts, exposure to sailing and sailing lessons to youth and adults, and through our adaptive sailing programs we offer healing and support programs.

In addition, the base has been the marine training site and classroom facility for Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas National Guard, the University of Texas Medical Branch, NASA and a host of service organizations.

Our beautiful state of the art LEED platinum certified building has been the site for weddings, reunions, celebrations, fundraisers, meetings and galas. Our community sailing team has hosted competitive national regattas, and recently, in partnership with the United States Power Squadron and Texas Parks & Wildlife, we closed out the year with the first graduating class of Sailor University.

We are looking for an exciting and challenging 2018 as we expand our student camp opportunities to include the addition of maritime and medical camps, more dates for scout and student summer camps, increase the number of school field trips, scholarships available for all camps, sailing and STEM to Stern programs, and provide the community enhanced year round membership benefits.

We have partnered with Moody Gardens, The Christina Grillo Sullivan Foundation, city of Houston Adaptive Sports Division, and the Galveston Convention & Visitors Bureau/Park Board, to develop the 2018 Land/Sea Adaptive Challenge Series, a citywide sports event for adaptive sailing, water skiing, tennis and basketball. Community Sailing will host the International 2018 Koch Cup and Doolin Cup Regatta, and SSBG will be the training facility for national collegiate sailing teams again this year.

Our success is largely based on the hard work and dedication of the outstanding volunteers that support our staff in planning and facilitating all of the programs named above. In addition, they are invaluable in assisting with the maintenance of the xeriscape landscaping, boat maintenance and hands on with adaptive and community sailing. We greatly appreciate their time and talents and will honor them at our annual meeting on Jan. 13. Members and guests are invited to attend.

If you have not had the opportunity to visit Sea Star Base Galveston, I invite you to do so. Start the year off with us. Get acquainted with our programs and consider becoming a member. Happy New Year!

Tino Gonzalez is executive director of Sea Star Base Galveston.
