The Daily News on Monday convened a newly configured editorial board meant to broaden and deepen both the newspaper’s opinion and news content.

The main change is Dolph Tillotson, former publisher of The Daily News and chairman of Southern Newspapers Inc., which owns the newspaper, joined the board and will be a frequent contributor to the opinion pages.

I look forward to Mr. Tillotson's voice on the editorial page. It's one thing the GCDN needs more of - intelligent, well-informed, rational, and fact-based conservatism. [thumbup]

Paula Flinn

I, too, look forward to Mr. Tillotson’s voice on the editorial page. His ideas are welcomed.

Carlos Ponce

The editorial board needs to examine its potential reader base in Galveston County. After several decades of Republican county-wide victories one would think you would provide something to appeal to them. Instead, the GCDN has gone Left and lost much of their Conservative readership. Publishing imported editorials from Leftist newspapers is like a middle finger directed at Conservatives. HOW ABOUT SOME BALANCE?????

Dolph Tillotson's last column shows heavy indoctrination from the Left. He needs to quit taking the AP feed as truthful.

Talking to neighbors I ask them: "It was in the Galveston Daily News. Didn't you read it?" The usual answer is "No. It's not the same paper. It's nothing but a Liberal rag."

BALANCE, BALANCE, BALANCE...... Do you know what that means?

Take as an example your sports writers when covering two local teams in competition. They don't take sides. They don't want to offend their readers.

Laura Addison

BINGO, Carlos. You hit the nail on the head. Balance is definitely needed on here. I will add that anyone who admits to voting for HRC is not a conservative.

Charles Douglas

[thumbup][thumbup] Ms. Addison!

Charles Douglas

This is what I most admire about Mr. Ponce, Mr.Hardee, and some other Conservatives on this platform...they don't let anything get in the way of truth, and telling it like it is!!! I like that! Ponce has been doing this for years, and taking idle, unwarranted criticism for doing do, but that has never stopped him!

Some of the WOKE LEFTISTS here who don't care about balance are the same ones who cry about others destroying the Constitution ,the First Amendment, and Democracy while Joe Biden and the Justice Department have weaponized the FBI, BIG TECH, ( TWITTER, FACEBOOK ETC.) ...against other American Citizens! They turn their heads to the shadow-banding, censoring, spying, and the no due process given to conservatives who speak out against what they are doing wrong in this nation!

Yes and this paper does lean LEFT...and I have noticed it for years, and didn't care enough to say anything about it until now! I notice Ole Joe Cool, after criticizing and undressing Trump publicly for having Top Secret, Classified Documents in his possession, has just been caught with, WAIT FOR IT,....NAW YOU HAVE TO WAIT......HE JUST GOT CAUGHT WITH TOP SECRET, AND CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS IN HIS POSSESSION TOO!!!!!!+

Ohhh how strange it is! We don't hear Big TECH, the FAKE MEDIA, crying for Biden to be jailed! We don't hear about early morning raids by FBI, Gov. Men, & Troopers Banging at Biden's doors with guns, and tanks going through his wife's underclothes looking for contraband.

This Administration has blood on it's hands going back to their deserting and running out on Americans in AFGHANISTAN, they have the blood of all of them who are dying in efforts to cross our Southern Borders on their hands! They have the blood of all those executed or killed the Mexican Gangs, & Cartels! They are complicit with those causing death by the distribution of Fentanyl ( Drug Cartels) operating freely in this nation with NOTHING being done by anybody here in charge of this country!

Lastly this Administration by their failure to take actions, supports Slavery of Muslins in China, and Child Slavery in the African Congo Cobalt Mines in the interest of going green! Why is it that we heard NOTHING from the WOKE-LEFT concerning any of all this? Why is it that we cannot read about it from the WOKE-LEFT MEDIA, and BIG TECH? Those who just took the House of Representatives back had better get going if they want to save this nation from total destruction by the WOKE-LEFT! Ohh by the way, I have not had my SLAVE FIX in over two weeks!!!!!!! That is to long and yall know this!!!!! I have not even heard anything about Jim Crow, Jim Eagle, or Segregation!!!!! [censored] aint right!!!!! Think about your Vote-Harvesting operation in the Minority neighborhoods! Got to keep us stirred up!!!!!!! [beam]

For those that think this bunch too liberal, I recommend the Epoch Times.

For the ones complaining about the AP stories in the GDN.

If you go to the AP section and click on the link, you will notice that there are AP stories and The Daily Wire stories. Also, the story below this one is from Dallas Morning News.

I did not go past the first page on the AP tab, but more stories were from the Dallas Morning News then was from AP.

I listed each source below and add the number of stories from each. More were from conservative sources, but not by much. Look to me it is a good balance.

Dallas Morning News RIGHT-CENTER BIAS These media sources are slightly to moderately conservative in bias. 1 story which was below this story.

The Daily Wire, a conservative media company that launched in 2015, has a clear conservative bias and no wish to hide it. 13 stories from the Daily Wire.

Ap: 11 stories under the AP tab.

Laura Addison

I see Business Wire only on here - not Daily wire.

Jim Forsythe

Should have said, I did not go past the first page on the AP tab, but more stories were from the Daily Wire then was from AP. Instead of, I did not go past the first page on the AP tab, but more stories were from the Dallas Morning News then was from AP.

Bailey Jones

Lot's of good conservative media out there, Jim. I've even taken to reading National Review and Gary's The Bulwark. But for our local County Clown Car Conservatives, a rating of "RIGHT-CENTER BIAS" is just another way of saying "LIBERAL". What they need is the additional rating of "Questionable Reasoning: Conspiracy Theories, Pseudoscience, Propaganda, Fake News, Failed Fact Checks".

Such as:

OAN - Overall, we rate One America News Questionable based on far-right bias, lack of sourcing, promotion of conspiracy theories, and propaganda, as well as numerous failed fact checks. OAN is not a credible news source.

NEWSMAX - We rate Newsmax Right Biased and Questionable based on the promotion of conspiracy theories and pseudoscience as well as numerous failed fact checks.

FOX NEWS - Overall, we rate Fox News right biased based on editorial positions that align with the right and Questionable due to the promotion of propaganda, conspiracy theories, pseudoscience, the use of poor sources, and numerous false claims and failed fact checks. Straight news reporting from beat reporters is generally fact-based and accurate, which earns them a Mixed factual rating.

INFOWARS - Overall, InfoWars/Alex Jones is a crackpot, tin foil hat-level conspiracy website that strongly promotes pseudoscience. The amount of fake news, debunked conspiracy claims, and extreme right-wing bias renders InfoWars a non-credible source.

THE BLAZE - Overall, we rate The Blaze strongly Right Biased and Questionable based on the promotion of conspiracy theories and numerous failed fact checks.

EPOCH TIMES - Overall, we rate The Epoch Times Right Biased and Questionable based on the publication of pseudoscience and the promotion of propaganda and conspiracy theories, as well as numerous failed fact checks.

(Reviews are from Media Bias Fact Check)

Don't forget the NY Post [beam]. For example, big update to the Biden classified documents story I do not see anywhere on this site:

Top Secret documents found unsecured in Biden's think tank included intel reports on Ukraine. It's no secret why the Biden crime family would want to steal Ukraine documents.

Ted Gillis

We’ll it must not be too big of a secret if you already know what’s inside them Laura.

Laura Addison

Correct, Ted, thanks to CNN who reported it first, I believe. The people in charge must be done with Uncle Joe. Clearly the only reason this information is out there.

Jim Forsythe

If you are relying on a small paper to supply national news the question is why. There are so many sources of national news why would the GDN duplicate that.

If you do not want to read the links to AP in the Galveston news, do not click on the AP button.

Laura Addison

Jim, it's not about "relying on a small paper to supply national news" - it's about the small paper pushing the left's agenda and when that agenda promotes only one side of the story that affects the entire community. Just look at how the GCDN promoted the covid shots and forced masking on school children, for example. There were a few opinion pieces from readers about the side effects and potential risks, but the larger stories about the MRNAs and masking were not published on here. One of the biggest scandals involving Pfizer and the fact that they never tested their "vaccine" on preventing transmission would not be reported anywhere here. GCDN can report as it chooses, but they don't get to report one side of the story and expect everyone to jump on board for the ride - no way. I am grateful for those who are able/willing to speak up for those who can't and tell the other side of the story. Let individuals make up their own minds from there.

Jim Forsythe

Biden, classified documents were found and were turn over to National Archives as soon as possible.

Lawyers for Biden discovered the documents last November while clearing out the office space and handed them over to the National Archives, which handles all such materials, Biden's special counsel Richard Sauber said. "The White House is cooperating with the National Archives and the Department of Justice," Sauber said in a statement.

Trump refused to turn over the documents until authorities retrieved them. Some of them were top secret.

In August, authorities searched ex-president Donald Trump's residence at Mar-a-Lago after he failed to respond to repeated requests for cooperation on retrieving documents taken from the White House after his 2020 election loss.

The FBI found thousands of government documents, including more than 100 that were marked classified, and some marked top secret in the ex-president's Florida club.

Subjects covered in the documents reportedly included sensitive intelligence on China and Iran, and nuclear secrets.

There is a difference in what Biden did, he turns in the documents as soon as they find they still have them and Trump who tried to keep them, even after he was told to return them.

Both need to face whatever music they deserved but withholding document after being told to return them is a lot more of a danger to the USA because Trump did not keep them under lock and key at all times, and people that have turned out to be spies were roaming his place, a few feet away from the unsecured documents.

Pete Nanos

Left out one significant fact. They knew about this before the last election and bheld onto it . But , hey, I expected just what is going on here. "Looks fair to us" said the socialists.

Jim Forsythe

Laura, just in.

Longtime Trump Organization finance chief Allen Weisselberg, who pleaded guilty in August to 15 counts including tax fraud, conspiracy and grand larceny, on Tuesday was sentenced to serve five months in jail.

Authorities had promised Weisselberg a steeply reduced sentence in exchange for testifying against the Trump Organization. He had faced up to 15 years in prison.

Weisselberg, testifying as a witness for the prosecution during a Trump Organization criminal trial in New York Supreme Court in November, said on cross-examination that he was embarrassed by his conduct and that his actions betrayed the Trump family, for whom he had worked for a half-century. Weisselberg testified that he was acting only for his own benefit.

Pete Nanos

f you had added someone with a conservative point of view or at least an open view it would have been significant. Adding a dyed in the wool liberal is nothing more than window dressing. But, hey, thanks for making it look like you're trying to be "objective".

Laura Addison

Relatable content: As CNN wrestles with declining ratings and staff layoffs, polling data suggests that many of the network's woes may stem from its perceived liberal bias....CNN CEO Chris Licht lamented the deterioration of journalistic standards in December during an interview with the New York Times.

"The uninformed vitriol, especially from the left, has been stunning," he said. "Which proves my point: so much of what passes for news is name-calling, half-truths and desperation."

Jim Forsythe

Why would you or anyone else go to any source such as AP or CNN if they or you do not agree whit how they report the news.

GDN does not force you to read the AP news they have for people that like that kind of reporting. Instead of complaining about AP news, just skip it.

Carlos Ponce

"GDN does not force you to read the AP news." No, they do not. But when Libtrolls exalt them as woke truth and give them credence (even the ones that don't appear in print) one must point out the BULL SCHIFF.

Bailey Jones

Neither CNN nor MSNBC are particularly trustworthy news sources. From the same rating source as above -

CNN - Overall, we rate CNN left biased based on editorial positions that consistently favor the left, while straight news reporting falls left-center through bias by omission. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to several failed fact checks by TV hosts. However, news reporting on the website tends to be sourced adequately with minimal failed fact checks.

MSNBC - Overall, we rate MSNBC Left Biased based on story selection that consistently favors the establishment left. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to news hosts and the website producing 3 pants on fire claims.

NYT, AP, and NPR are among the most factual news sources in the US, but are both rated left-leaning, editorially. I'm not aware of a single conservative or clown car conservative media outlet that beats them on factual reporting.

If you want factual AND unbiased reporting - here is a list of many that earn that rating:

I like Reuters and Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Lisa Blair

A good way to avoid the whole conservatives or liberals issues would be to do some real investigative reporting on City and County issues. How about a deep dive into the Port? Their finances and the impact of another cruise terminal. Does their current business model benefit residents? And the Park Board. Look at the agenda for Thursday’s special meeting and your eyes will pop out. But the GCDN reports nothing until after it’s happened. There’s so much local news that goes unreported. No wonder there’s so much apathy and lack of participation in our local elections.

Charlotte O'rourke

Lisa, I couldn’t agree more with the request for more local news. Since the newspaper brought forth the issue on failure to adhere to open meetings laws, the Park Board has been holding policy discussions in open meetings. That’s good news. Unfortunately, the majority of agenda topics no longer have staff recommendations and background information. When I called yesterday to ask why not, the answer …. no information is available at this time so a request for open records before the meeting (attorneys fees for HOT opinion) wouldn’t help and it would be illegal to post that information since the agenda topic is already posted. Huh? Definitely more training in open government is needed. One would think if it were on the agenda to be voted on, the information on the topic should be available to Trustees and the public so informed debate among Trustees and informed public commentary could ensue. Anyone else interested in the amount of public dollars being spent to fight the city on cleaning up this HOT mess instead of working with the city to find a solution? Or how public money will be spent lobbying against the city and each other? Time for communication and reassessments instead of blowing public money.

Joseph A Willis

The Daily News is not in any way shape or form a left leaning paper. I see a great deal of balance in what I read in the editorial pages. My friends on the right are afraid of facts. Let's keep the good balance of opinions and ideas. I see a great deal of facts being used to base opinions and that is a good thing. The purpose of the editorial page is to incite rational thinking. Who can be against that? We might all learn something from hearing another point of view. The idea that we should cater to one overall perspective defeats the purpose of the opinion page.

Bailey Jones

Media Bias Fact Check says - "Overall, we rate the Galveston County Daily News Right-Center biased based on editorial positions that slightly favor the right. We also rate them High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a clean fact check record."

That's in line with my experience here.

Carlos Ponce

"Media Bias Fact Check" ... There's your problem, Bailey.

Pete Nanos

You see balance? Really? Catering to one side is exactly what this paper does. The left side.

Gary Scoggin

Many people are so conservative that they think anyone one inch to their left is a raging liberal. Same goes with liberals.

And anyone who thinks the GCDN is a liberal rag has no idea what they are talking about.

Carlos Ponce

"And anyone who thinks the GCDN is a liberal rag has no idea what they are talking about."

They'll just stop their subscriptions......[whistling]

Jim Forsythe

Carlos, I guess you agree the GDN is not a rag, because you still have a subscription.

Carlos Ponce

I keep up with local high school sports. As posted before, the sports writers respect their readers. When Hitchcock beat La Marque in football you did not read "BULLDOGS BEAT CLUELESS COUGARS". They respect both local teams. Instead you read "Hitchcock shines in 2nd half to overtake rival La Marque". Also, at the Santa Fe Old School Museum we document alumni deaths. The GCDN provides that information. Sure I could search each area funeral home website but this is better. Also, like a teacher with a red pen, I feel my duty to point out inaccuracies in Libtrolls' posts. One Libtroll once posted "The three branches of government are the president, the House and the Senate",[rolleyes] which was inaccurate. The three branches are the executive, the legislative and the judicial branch. I would not want any reader to be misinformed.

Is the GCDN a "rag"? The GCDN is a mixed bag. Their sports are excellent, local news is usually presented well. Where it falls short is NO BALANCE on editorials and the AP feed which is heavily biased to the extreme Left.

Charles Douglas

"Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: And he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him."

( Proverbs 26:27 ).

This is happening to "JOE COOL" right now! Everything he threw at Trump has boomerang back on him!

Joe Cool crucified Trump in public for having Top Secret ..Classified Documents in Trump's possession while all the time JOE COOL was sitting on and hiding Top Secret and Classified records dealing with the Russian Hoax, The Ukraine/ Hunter Biden fiasco, and with Iran! What is Joe Cool trying to hide? We are going to find out!

What a Hypocritical lying crook! There needs to be a full & exhustive investigation into this sham of a Leader! I would wager that there will be a treasure trove of evidence of Treason, Fruad, Collusion, and Theft found to hang Joe Cool out to dry concerning his and his family's relationship with China! I can see the WOKE-LEFT trembling in "WET BOOTS"...NOW because the proverbial worm has turned! [beam]

Nick Saum

In an era where the only news that sells is sensationalized media -- left or right wing, pick your demon of the day -- the News does pretty good at what is it: a local newspaper reporting on local issues. There is inherent bias to every media source, usually reflected in the community it serves. Saying the newspaper needs to become more conservative or liberal because of the voting patterns of the local population is full of incorrect assumptions. There are plenty of fiscally conservative socially liberal republicans as well as fiscally liberal and socially conservative democrats. At the end of the day, if you look for fault, you will find it. All you can do is try to report what you see to the best of your ability.

Bailey Jones

[thumbup] And why would you subscribe to a newspaper that only reinforces your own ingrained worldview? I don't need to be told that I'm right. I want someone to challenge me when I'm wrong.

"A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way." - Mark Twain

Carlos Ponce

Does Bailey understand what BALANCE means?

Jim Forsythe

Balance means GDN. If you do not want to read AP stories, do not go to the AP section.

Carlos Ponce

On editorial policy the GCDN is unbalanced.

Charles Wiley

I was told by a tv news director many years ago when I asked about “balance” in the news that the news has no obligation to “balance” but it does to profit. The news is a business! Once we learn that, we can understand perspective.

Bailey Jones

In the old days, TV News was a financial loss for networks, but they did it for the public good and to satisfy the public-service requirements levied on users of the public's airwaves by the FCC in those days.
