Clary's Demolished

A crew demolishes the old Clary’s Seafood Restaurant building on Teichman Road in Galveston on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019. The iconic island restaurant, opened by Clary Milburn in 1977, had been closed since Milburn died in 2016. The building was slated for demolition earlier this year because of its poor condition.

It was a sad sight Wednesday morning when a big yellow track hoe went to work knocking down the shell of Clary’s Seafood Restaurant, which had been a Galveston institution.

There’s very little news in the demolition itself, of course. Clary Milburn, who made the place an institution with his Louisiana-influenced cooking and gentlemanly demeanor, died in February 2016.

The best fried shrimp that i have ever eaten. So sad to see the building come down. Many memories over the years there.

Great story about one of the good things in life that in sum makes Galveston great.

I wish we could get the AP to write more about GREAT AMERICANS like this and less about the certifiable circus in Washington. This is real life, warts and all. Great column; heartwarming and genuine. Thanks Michael and of course, thanks to Clary's for the memories.

I remember taking some out of town guests to Gaido’s one afternoon, but the line was so long we decided not to wait. Our guests asked, “well I wonder were the locals go?”. I knew of course, so I took them to Clary’s and they enjoyed it so much that they told all of their out of town friends about it too.
