Pride Flag Stolen

Vickie Shaw, right, gets a hug from fellow League City resident Yana Ponce in front of her house in League City on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019. Shaw and her wife recently had a pride flag stolen from their porch and a threatening letter left in its place. Shaw says that neighbors responded by flooding the couple with many replacement flags and other signs of support. She says she now has so many flags that she's giving them away anyone who wants one.

Stories of bigotry and rage rarely end well. But in the case of stolen pride flags and a threat against a League City couple, the story ends with optimism and the upholding of core democratic values and constitutional principles.

Last week, The Daily News reported about the recurring theft of rainbow pride flags at a home in the affluent South Shore Harbour neighborhood. The culprit left behind a menacing note: “So help me God if you ever disrespect the American flag again, a whole lot more than your flag is getting taken. I don’t support gays, clearly, but I don’t give a damn if you keep it to yourself.”

Amen and amen. The sooner we take these principles to heart, the sooner we can heal as a nation. There is searing intolerance from both the Left and Right. That is fundamentally deeply at odds with the values most Americans believe in.
