Most holidays, especially the summer holidays and New Year’s Eve, it’s fitting for us to publish warnings about drunken and otherwise impaired driving. But in the summer especially, there are other important warnings to heed, as well.

Memorial Day weekend, which begins Friday, is the most popular boating holiday of the year, according to the Water Sports Foundation, and of course kicks off boating season. This year likely will see more first-time boat owners on the water because in 2020 the pandemic had people scrambling for socially distanced family fun. That scramble led more than 415,000 people in the United States to buy their first boats, according to data from the U.S. Coast Guard.
