Jocelyn Thomas Goins, Affectionately known by Ms. J, 61, of Galveston Texas passed her crown on November 22, 2017 at home surrounded by her loving daughters, family and close friends.
She was born in Galveston Texas on August 3, 1956, to the late Rev. James B. Thomas and Mrs. Ruby Gamble Thomas. She accepted Christ at an early age at Avenue L Baptist Church. She was over the youth program at Market Street Baptist Church where her father ministered. She was raised on the west end of Galveston Texas where she attended GISD schools and graduated from Ball High School in 1974. Soon after graduation she entered Prairie View A&M University. She earned her bachelor degree in Education. She obtained her Master’s Degree in administration from University of Houston Clear Lake.
Jocelyn Thomas Goins lived here on earth as a soldier for the people she came into contact with. The joy she had mentoring and teaching children. Jocelyn started teaching for the GISD soon after graduating College in 1978 at Parker Elementary School. After two years she took her teaching SER program which helps individuals from low income communities to transfer their lives through education, training, employment and financial empowerment services. She continued to service the community she ventured to the town of Hitchcock where she taught 1st grade and started her 1st drill team at Northside Elementary. She returned to GISD in 1991 to San Jacinto Elementary and Administration at Austin Middle School, Central School and Ball High School. She continued until her retirement from Ball High in 2016. She used her precious time with us to educate the minds and develop the lives of young people in Galveston County.
She past her beautiful legacy to her children Iesha Deyon (Aaron), Dana, Kaya, Cearia and Maira. Continuing her legacy are her grandchildren; Justis, London, Englyn and Bryson.
She leaves her sibling Brothers James E. Thomas and Lawrence B. Thomas (Peggy) and Sisters Paula Thomas and Sharon G. Parker. Nephews James E Thomas Jr and Randall Parker III., and nieces Candace Cooper, Nikki Bell (Jason) and Courtney Thomas. A host of Godchildren and family.
The family would like to give a special thank you to her extended family and friends for their love and thoughtfulness. Thank you to Yvette Rittenhouse, Terri Watkins, Jackie Singleton, Brenda Thomas, the staff at Texas Oncology Deke Slayton Center and Austin Midtown. A special thank you to the staff at Providence Hospice.
A visitation service will be held on December 1, 2017 at Avenue L Baptist Church, 2612 Ave. L from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and Memorial Celebration will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Home going Services will be held on Saturday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Methodist Church, 2803 53rd street, Galveston.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you make donations to the Jocelyn Thomas-Goins Scholarship Fund and her Second Chance “Don’t Give Up” Scholarship Fund. Bins will be set up at both events to put monetary donations in.
