Joseph “Joe” Anthony Delesandri passed away from this life on January 31st, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 73.

He was born on April 30th, 1944 in Galveston, Texas, the son of Louis Sr. and Frances Delesandri. He was a resident of Hitchcock his whole life and a permanent fixture around Highland Bayou/Bayou Vista area lovingly known as Joe the Bait Man. He learned the value of hard work at a young age. His love for the water led him to enlist into the Navy where he served his country from 1968 to 1972. His love of country and service in the Navy lead him to be an active lifetime member of VFW Post 5400 in Santa Fe, Texas. After the service, he returned home to work alongside his family at Louis’ Fish Camp until 1988 when his parents retired. He continued his love for shrimping until hanging his net up in the early 2000s. He went to work as an Operator for the water department for the City of Texas City retiring in 2010. Retirement and age did not slow Joe down as he continued to sell bait at his pier side business. He enjoyed keeping his friends and customers in bait so they could go fishing. His customers often became friends. Many came for the bait but just as many came only to visit with him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Delesandri Sr. and Frances Terrasso Delesandri; father and mother-in-law, Clem and Lillian Pavlu; brother-in-law, Norman Lockhardt; sister-in-law, Pam Wytovak, as well as the beloved family dog, Bear.

Joe is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Vernell Pavlu Delesandri, and daughter, Jennifer Delesandri; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Chase Hansen; brothers Louie Jr. and Davy Delesandri; sister-in-law, Diane Lockhardt; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Greg Mazzantini; brother and sister-in-law, David and Debbie Pavlu; sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Ronnie Cox. Joe was loved by Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, multitudes of friends/extended family, and the family pets, Mama Girl and Molly.

Friends and family will be received at a visitation on Tuesday, February 6th, 2018, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City, Texas. The Service will be performed by Father John Kappa of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church beginning at 6:30 p.m. and Rosary will follow.

The family request memorials be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
