MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Javier Assad struck out nine hitters over seven innings, leading the Myrtle Beach Pelicans over the Winston-Salem Dash in a 1-0 win on Wednesday.

Assad (2-3) picked up the win after he walked one while allowing one hit.

The game's only run was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. After leading off the inning with a single, Cam Balego advanced to second on a walk by Kevonte Mitchell, went to third on a flyout by Jhonny Bethencourt, and then scored on a wild pitch.

Cristian Castillo (1-5) went seven innings, allowing one run and four hits to take the hard-luck loss in the Carolina League game. He also struck out six and walked one.

The Dash were blanked for the third time this season, while the Pelicans' staff recorded their third shutout of the year.
