A man held in the Galveston County Jail since 2020 died Monday afternoon, more than a week after collapsing in the jail's exercise area, Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset said.

Christopher Lopez, 56, of Galveston, collapsed at the jail Dec. 31, Trochesset said.

Lopez had been in custody on charges of aggravated assault since December 2020, Trochesset said.

The exact cause of Lopez's death hasn't been determined, Trochesset said. Jail staff responded to his collapse moments after it happened and he was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment, Trochesset said.

It's unclear whether Lopez ever regained consciousness.

Lopez's death was reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and the Galveston County District Attorney's Office, Trochesset said. The Texas Rangers have been asked to investigate the death, which is typical when a person dies in custody.
