Authorities are working to identify a man whose body was found Monday afternoon under the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier.

The man had cuts on his wrists and was believed to have died by suicide, according to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office. His body was found on the beach beneath the pier at 2500 Seawall Blvd. about 3:30 p.m..

The man didn’t have any identification on him when he was found, said John “D.J.” Florence, the county’s lead medical examiner investigator. It’s not known whether he was a local person or a visitor to the island.

The man was about 6 feet tall and weighed about 220 pounds, Florence said. He was white, with blond and gray hair, a receding hairline and a beard. He was wearing a maroon shirt with writing on it and camouflage-patterned shorts.

Anyone with information about the man’s identity can call the Galveston Police Department at 409-765-3702 or the medical examiner’s office at 409-935-9274.
