A La Marque man found dead in a Texas City parking lot early Wednesday morning was the victim of a fall, not foul play, the Texas City Police Department said.

James Daniel Thomas, 44, was found dead in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police department spokesman Cpl. Allen Bjerke said.

A passerby found Thomas, who was dead when police and emergency medical personnel arrived in the 600 block of Ninth Avenue North, Bjerke said. He had obvious head trauma, but it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the wound.

At about 9 a.m., police issued a statement seeking the public’s help in figuring out what happened to Thomas.

The case was closed by noon.

Investigators found security camera video showing Thomas died after falling off the roof of the one-story building, Bjerke said. His death is considered an accident, Bjerke said.

Police didn’t speculate about why Thomas scaled the building before his death.

He had no known association with the business, and there were no signs of a break-in at the store, Bjerke said.
