The Galveston man killed in a shooting Monday was identified as Santos Justin Martinez, 27, the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office said Tuesday.

Martinez died early Monday morning after being shot in the chest, the medical examiner said.

He was one of two people wounded in a shooting on 61st Street, according to the Galveston Police Department.

The other person was shot in the face but suffered only minor injuries, police said. Police haven't disclosed the identity of the second man.

The shooting occurred near the 2800 block of 61st Street about 1:30 a.m. Soon after the shooting, police detained a person they identified as a "subject" in the investigation but didn't make any immediate arrests.

Witnesses told police there had been an argument between groups of people before the shooting. The argument apparently escalated to an exchange of gunfire, police said.

The case might be referred to a grand jury to determine whether crimes had been committed, police said.

Grand jury referrals are made by the Galveston County District Attorney's Office.

Martinez's death was the first reported shooting homicide in Galveston since September 2020.
