The Galveston Independent School District recently received a $1.7 million grant from the Moody Foundation, said Billy Rudolph, the district’s director of communications and marketing.
The grant supports a five-year initiative meant to benefit not only district students but students anywhere on the island attending charter and private schools as well.
The grant is intended to improve resources for dyslexia education throughout Galveston.
“The opportunity to work with the Moody Foundation to help solve the challenges of dyslexia education across Galveston is one that’s both exciting and extremely fulfilling,” said Sondra Harrington, lead dyslexia specialist for the public school district.
“We’re fortunate to have an organization in our community that values education,” she said.
The grant allowed the district to hire Harrington and a community dyslexia initiative grant coordinator.
It also will help fund professional development training for almost 100 teachers in year one and identify 16 teachers as campus specialists to earn language therapist certifications.
A specialized software program also will be implemented for classroom use to better support students with dyslexia.
