Friends and family of Mason Nelson, along with community members, gathered Sunday on the beach near 29th Street in Galveston for a paddle-out to honor the Ball High School freshman who died in a car crash Sept. 2.

More than a 100 people on surf boards, paddleboards and kayaks paddled out past the rock groins to lay flowers in the water and share a moment of silence for Nelson.
