An off-duty officer shot and killed a woman Thursday evening in the alley behind the 1000 block of Broadway, Galveston police said.

The officer was going to his vehicle with his family when he noticed a disturbance at about 6:45 p.m., police said. The off-duty officer, who sent his family away from the area, had a firearm and went to the disturbance.

The officer shot the woman who police said was involved in the disturbance.

Emergency crews took the woman in an ambulance to Jennie Sealy Emergency Room. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Galveston Police Department and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting.

Police did not identify the officer, but said he had been with the department for many years.

Police did not say what happened between the time the officer approached the people involved in the disturbance and the time that the officer shot the woman.

Police interviewed witnesses at the scene but made no arrests, police said.

At 8:45 p.m., police crews were still on scene. During the evening, officers searched building surfaces and the ground with flashlights. Other offices with cameras took photographs covering a block of 11th Street.
