An 18-wheeler drove into the side of a church Friday afternoon after it swerved on state Highway 6 to avoid a collision with another vehicle, police said.

The crash happened in the 10000 block of state Highway 6 about 4 p.m., Hitchcock police Capt. John Jenkins said. The truck was traveling west when a car pulled out of a funeral home parking lot in front of it.

The truck swerved left to avoid a collision, crossing through the eastbound lane and driving into the True Vine Ministries church, Jenkins said.

The driver of the car blamed for the crash fled the scene, Jenkins said. No charges had been filed on Friday afternoon.

The truck was carrying well water, Jenkins said.

The truck driver hit his head and was taken by ambulance to a University of Texas Medical Branch hospital, Jenkins said. His injuries were not believed to be serious. No one was inside the church at the time of the crash.
