Texas City police arrested a man Tuesday morning after he was accused of hitting a police officer in his car while the officer was trying to stop traffic after an accident, officials said.

William Joseph Knowles, 24, of Cleveland, Texas, was charged with reckless driving, said Cpl. Melencio Villarreal, spokesman for the Texas City Police Department.

Knowles’ bond was set at $1,000, Villarreal said.

A Texas city police officer responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at about 8:40 a.m. Tuesday in the 6800 block of Emmett F. Lowry Expressway in Texas City, Villarreal said.

The officer used his vehicle to try to stop traffic in the eastbound lanes of the road when a white pickup truck heading east hit the police car from behind while the officer was inside the car, Villarreal said.

The officer was transported to Clear Lake Regional Hospital with minor injuries and later released, Villarreal said.
