Student enrollment at Galveston College increased by 6 percent this school year, the school reported Tuesday.

The college had an enrollment of 2,251 this fall. Last year the school's reported enrollment was 2,119.

The school credited the enrollment growth to online classes, dual credit classes and expanded programs.

The college expanded its welding and cosmetology programs to include day and evening courses this year.

Galveston College will reach its 50th Anniversary in 2017. In its inaugural semester in 1967, it had 703 students.
