Three days after a young boy’s body was found on the beach near 8th Street and Seawall Boulevard, police were seeking answers about his identity.
An autopsy from the medical examiner’s office is pending, and police do not know who the boy is, Capt. Joshua Schirard said Monday. The boy was between the ages of 3 and 5, about 3 feet tall and about 30 pounds, Schirard said. He had dark hair and brown eyes and was possibly Hispanic, authorities said.
A person walking a less-trafficked stretch of beach discovered the body in the sand about 10 feet from the surf and reported it to police around 5:30 p.m. Friday, Schirard said.
A small crowd gathered on Saturday for a vigil near the spot where the body was found and have been adding items to a memorial near the Stewart Beach entrance sign. The boy’s death was heartbreaking, especially since no one has stepped up to claim him, Galveston resident and vigil organizer Tina BeBout said.
“It’s just heartbreaking to me, and I couldn’t sit there and do nothing,” BeBout said. “As a parent, it hurts my heart and makes me mad at the same time.”
