GALVESTON

The Galveston County Health District on Thursday reported 11 deaths among residents confirmed to have COVID-19.

To date, 193 deaths of people from Galveston County have been related to the virus, according to the health district.

The latest group of deaths include nine men and two women. Two of the deaths were people in their 50s; two were in their 60s; four were in their 70s; two were in their 80s; and one was older than 90 years old. All of the people had unspecified pre-existing medical conditions, according to the health district.

The deaths occurred between Dec. 1 and Dec. 27, according to the health district.

They were the most COVID-related deaths confirmed on a single day since 31 deaths were announced on Sept. 8.

Twenty-five local people were confirmed dead in December, making it COVID's fourth-deadliest month in Galveston County since the first death occurred in April. Death reports often lag weeks behind reports of new cases and hospitalizations.

Fifty-seven local people died in July, according to the health district.

The health district announced 312 new local cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, as well as 74 new recoveries. To date, 21,611 people in Galveston County have been diagnosed with the virus, and 16,167 people have recovered.

There were 5,251 active cases of the COVID-19 among county residents, marking the most active cases reported on a single day in the county since Aug. 10, when there were 5,333 cases in the county at one time. There were 4,151 active cases in the county on Jan. 1, according to the district.

There were 119 people being treated for COVID-19 in county hospitals on Thursday, according to the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council. Of those, 36 people were in intensive care units.

Nationally we've recorded over 18,000 deaths in the past 7 days. We will surely exceed 400,000 deaths by the end of this month. Everyone please, please, please exercise common sense and stayed masked, avoid crowds, and limit your interaction with people outside of your household as much as possible.

The only man I know who died from the Chinese virus had severe lung problems for several years. If you have a pre-existing condition then control your environment by as Bailey puts it, limiting "your interaction with people outside of your household as much as possible".

That's it. I will end any further interaction with this Russian troll. I advise everyone to do the same to avoid the usual misinformation and worse.

I quit responding to him awhile back. But I occasionally relapse. Maybe we need a 12 Step program for feeding trolls.

Misinformation like you present in your columns.....

A Russian troll? Lol. Who? Carlos? He was my 9th grade Algebra teacher back in 1979. He’s is Hispanic as is his name.

Carlos Ponce

Happy New Year Shawn! Good to hear from you. This is what happens in the GCDN forums. You post something they disagree with and suddenly you're listed as a "Russian Troll". It's similar to elementary and junior high bullying tactics.

We get a daily report on covid deaths. How many total deaths? 4.5 million US citizens died in 2019, a normal rate for our population. Same number likely will die this year because the covid deaths were mostly among those already dying from other causes.

Bailey Jones

This is incorrect Gary. 2020 saw an increase in deaths over 2019 (and the previous 5 years) of more than 300,000. These were COVID deaths. A mathematical proof of this fact can be found in the comments here - https://www.galvnews.com/news/article_4ee7a0dd-a0c8-534c-ae70-db7aba80f9dd.html

Don’t bother, Bailey.

I don't do it for Gary M's benefit, Gary S, but for the innocent bystander who may come through. This is one of those persistent lies that do real damage to the nation. I live in the hope that someone will see my response, check the data for themselves, and become a better informed citizen. Who knows - it may birth critical thinking in someone's brain.

Gary Scoggin

You are a good man, Bailey. There is no upside to trying to convince some of the fact-resistance folks around here.

Bailey Jones

Gary S, I like to think, that with Trump finally out of the way, we can try to get back to finding some common ground. Most Trumpsters don't seem willing, but among a few conservatives here I have been able to find some. Gary M and I agree about recycling if nothing else. And there are others here I can stand with on certain issues, and just set aside the fact that they may fanatically cling to theories that I know to be false. During the election, I waged a fierce, and I thought amusing, war of signs with an elderly Trumpster neighbor. She quit speaking to me. At Christmas, I baked her a truly awesome cheesecake, and she left a thank you note in my mailbox. And now we're friends again.

As much fun as it is to just relentlessly grind away at the opinions of people I disagree with, ultimately that doesn't get us anywhere. I'm trying to spend less energy on those who present themselves as lost causes, and more on people with whom I can find some agreement - even if it's only once in a while.

Dying with the Chinese virus is different than dying from the Chinese virus. According to the CDC 94% of the former, 6% of the latter.

Jim Forsythe

Thanks, Bailey.

Gary Miller

A US population of 330 million with life expectancy of less than 80 years automaticly equals 4.4 million deaths a year from all causes. Births and immigration maintains population growth.

Gary Miller

Because most Covid deaths were people with life ending conditions the reported covid deaths will be among the 4.4 million. Life expectancy will not decline more than a week or two if at all.
