Wow - who could have foreseen that COVID would spread during a COVID pandemic?

Carlos Ponce

Check to see if the number of deaths and hospitalizations have increased proportionally.

Bailey Jones

Since you asked - yes, hospitalizations have doubled in June in Galveston County. Hospitalizations have doubled in June in Harris County. Hospitalizations have doubled in June in the state of Texas. This corresponds nicely to the doubling of new cases in Texas during the same time period. Deaths are rising, but not as fast (from 1683 on June 1 to 2270 today, an increase of 35%), as one would expect.

Carlos Ponce

As of yesterday there were 34 hospitalizations in Galveston County. Not good, but at the rate of recovery that isn't as bad as other counties.

As of yesterday there are 223 COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Galveston TSA (trauma service area), double the 111 we had just 23 days ago. Houston TSA shows 1343 COVID-19 hospitalizations, up from 482 on June 1st (+278%). State wide it's 4389, up from 1756 on June 1 (+ 250%).

During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon about the availability of hospital beds to treat COVID-19 patients, Gov Abbott said the Galveston TSA had a higher level of COVID-19 hospitalizations than the rest of the state. In that region, more than 10 percent of hospitalizations are for COVID-19. On average in other parts of Texas, COVID-19 accounts for only about 5.6 percent of hospital patients.

(The Galveston TSA includes parts of Texas from Lake Jackson to Galveston to Beaumont to Jasper, with a total population of 1.3M. The Galveston TSA contains 1842 hospital beds. Current capacity is at 81%, with only 19 ICU beds available.)

Bailey and Carlos: Another impressive number is the percentage of positives. In May the number was one positive to every 19 tests. Today its one positive for every five tests. When you use the #positve score it rules out the crazy notion that the increase is due to testing.

Bailey Jones

Another way of seeing that is to look at the graphs. Testing is going up linearly, positives are going up exponentially. The percentages of positives - the slope of the graph - increases with time.

Carlos: Let's please leave out number of deaths and stick to hospitalizations or #positive unless you are willing to let us know the number of dead you think acceptable and might justify a mask-on order or a serious condition. Do you have a number?.

Carlos Ponce

The number of deaths has remained constant. The last number of hospitalized is at 34, also constant.

Bill Broussard

That completely avoids my question. Is there a number of deaths that you need to start masking in public

If you get HBO let me recommend this months installment of VICE a news show. This month they ride around with a person who owns four funeral homes in New York during its peak. It is a real life nightmares
