Galveston College actually offered such a course in the early 70’s. I know. I took that course as an elective.

[thumbup] African American history is American history. America simply would not exist without the contributions and accomplishments of African Americans. The labor of American slaves created the nation's wealth, build its great institutions, powered the industrial revolution, and was the motivation for our ever westward expansion. The black experience is the American experience - our food, our art, our music, our literature, our language, our religion, our politics, our laws, our economy, our very souls - and too many of our children (and their parents and grandparents) are ignorant of it.

Well stated. And forever will it beg the question as to why these facts are not better acknowledged, recognized for their value to all of us and collectively celebrated in a meaningful manner. (A rhetorical question, as you might guess.)

There are two text books in one of my closets titled Black Women in America (Oxford Press Second Edition). The other is titled Latinos & Latinas in the United States (Oxford Press). I’m not sure if these belonged to my daughter, she attended Galveston College, or belonged to my son, who attend San Jacinto. Both books are in pristine condition with no dog eared pages, so I’m sure neither of my kids retained much from either book!

But congratulations to Dickinson High School. It’s long over due.

It's never too late to read them, Ted.
