After a Texas lawmaker was arrested last week and hit with felony drug possession charges, Galveston County’s state representative is calling for all lawmakers to be screened for drugs.

Last week, state Rep. Poncho Nevarez, a Democrat from Eagle Pass, was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

I'm not an advocate of drug testing, but I expect that the results of drug testing our lawmakers would be hilarious.

Jim Casey

Who is going to pay for drug testing lawmakers, and who is going to profit from it?

Bailey Jones

taxpayers will pay for it, friends of lawmakers will profit from it

Gary Scoggin

Drug testing is cheap.

Craig Mason

I like the idea of drug testing. I think it makes sense. I have to drug test for my job. So far I am liking some the ideas of Mayes Middleton. Maybe they don’t lose their pension but if they do not successfully rehab they are removed from office. No different than what happens in the private sector. Drug testing is cheap and easily accessed in this day and age.

Myself and most everyone I have worked with became subject to periodic, random, and incident drug testing some 30 years ago with the passage of OPA 90 by...lawmakers. As far as I am concerned every lawmaker, Local, State, Federal, and International should be subject to the same drug testing they impose upon others.

Paul Hyatt

All elected officials should have to pass a random drug/alcohol screen every year.... When I was out at the refinery we had to do it to keep our jobs, so why can't ALL elected officials do the exact same thing. If they don't want to do it, then let them step down.

Gary Scoggin

I also believe that lawmakers should receive IQ tests.😁

Carlos Ponce

Lawmakers received IQ tests while in school but only their teachers, counselors and administrators had access to them.

Carlos Ponce

By the way, recent presidents' IQ points: Trump 165, Obama 145, GW Bush 125, Clinton 150, George HW Bush 145, Reagan 125, Carter 150, Ford 130, Nixon 135, L. Johnson 140, Kennedy 155, Eisenhower 145, F Roosevelt 150, etc.

So the president with the highest IQ is Donald J. Trump. "Sorry losers and haters, but my I.Q. is one of the highest -and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure, it's not your fault." Donald J. Trump, May 8, 2013 Feel better, Gary Scoggin?

http://www.buzzfuse.net/33-1/american-presidents-ranked-by-their-iq-score/

Note: other sources list Trump's IQ at a mere 156, still the highest among recent presidents. Other sources list John Quincy Adams at 168.75 as the highest but this is mere speculation since IQ tests were not created until 1912 by William Stern.

Bailey Jones

The "buzzfuse" article is fake - it's actually an IQ test of a sort. Advertisers figure that anyone stupid enough to click on it are easy marks.

Carlos Ponce

Did Bailey click on it?

Bailey Jones

I sure did, Carlos. I click on all your links.

Carlos Ponce

Interesting since you posted, "Advertisers figure that anyone stupid enough to click on it are easy marks."

Miceal O'Laochdha

Absolutely right Carlos. Donald J. Trump is the President with the highest IQ. He is also the biggest, strongest, most powerful, most handsome, most effective, most spiritual, and just generally greatest President that, not only America, but indeed the whole Universe has ever seen and ever will. That is why we must get working on the job of making him President for Life. And we must get all medical researchers (only the very best who have ever lived, of course) working on ways to extend this superman's life indefinitely. Make America Trump Again!

Gary Scoggin

Agree. In fact we should refer to him as "Brilliant Leader." Wait. That title is already taken.

Carlos Ponce

Michael, Donald Trump is a follower of Jesus Christ. Everything else is irrelevant.

Carlos Ponce

Make that "Miceal, Donald Trump is a follower of Jesus Christ. Everything else is irrelevant." My bad.

Bailey Jones

I think I see a new Secretary of State in the making.

Miceal O'Laochdha

The Donald is going to very upset with you Carlos...you have that completely backwards. He has often said that the Messiah is a follower of his. Best to be careful making errors like that. Mr. Big Stuff will be tweeting that he doesn't even know you and questioning your loyalty to the good ol' US of T.

Carlos Ponce

"He has often said that the Messiah is a follower of his" No, never did.

Gary Scoggin

"only their teachers, counselors and administrators had access to them" -- obviously

Bailey Jones

shhhh - don't point out the obvious logical fallacy.

Carlos Ponce

A student's IQ does not appear on state PEIMS data nor is reported to school boards. Ask yourself, was your school tested IQ ever revealed to you? The student and his parent(s) are usually kept out of the information loop. Some parents will ask for the information. What is it used for? To determine at-risk students, to see if a student's instruction needs modification or placement.

Bill Cochrane

I support Middleton's idea, but who is going to vote on this? The people or the politicians? I think if the people vote it will pass easily. The politicians - never. It has about the same chance of happening as politicians voting on giving themselves term limits, or banning lobbyists.

Carlos Ponce

State Sen. Pat Fallon (R–Prosper) proposed random drug testing of members of the legislature during a legislative session in SB 2287:

https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=86R&Bill=SB2287

The bill did not go far after referred to the Committee on State Affairs on March 21, 2019.

Not to mention Ted :Unabomber" Kaczynski - 152; Hemann Goering - 138; Rodney Alcala, also known as The Dating Game Serial Killer - 170; Jeffrey Dahmer - 144; Ted Bundy - 136
