A body found by La Marque firefighters in a blazing car Friday morning had not been identified on Saturday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

At about 6:45 a.m., crews for the La Marque Fire Department were dispatched after a report of a Ford Expedition engulfed in flames in the 5600 block of Mitchell Lane near FM 2004, police said. Emergency crews found an adult body inside the vehicle, authorities said.

The vehicle identification numbers had been scratched off the SUV, officials said.

The medical examiner’s office performed an autopsy, but as of Saturday afternoon the office had not yet been able to identify the body, Chief Investigator John “D.J.” Florence said.

Police were investigating the incident as a homicide. No arrests had been made Saturday.
