The car crash that killed popular island restaurateur Ronnie Maceo is under investigation because of his death, police said Tuesday.
The driver of a car that struck Maceo’s Jeep already had been cited for failing to stop at a red light and not having a driver’s license, Sgt. Stacey Pappilion said.
An investigation began when Maceo, 75, died Nov. 13 after being hospitalized for almost a month because of injuries sustained from the car crash, she said.
Police would not identify the person cited in the crash and wouldn’t disclose any details about the investigation.
The information was being withheld because of the investigation, Pappilion said.
Maceo and Cruz Cortez, owner of Cruz Cortez Clothiers, were at the intersection of 27th Street and Broadway on Oct. 17 when a vehicle broadsided Maceo’s Jeep, causing it to roll, Concetta Maceo-Sims, his daughter, said at the time.
Maceo-Sims could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Cortez suffered minor injuries and the other driver was uninjured, but Maceo suffered neck and back injuries, including broken vertebrae, Maceo-Sims said.
Maceo was a local icon operating Maceo’s Spice & Import Co. for decades, most recently at 2706 Market St.
