The Galveston City Council clarified Thursday that people who operate a short-term rental without registering it will be fined $500 a day of operation.

Although the rule already existed, it wasn’t clearly contained in the short-term rental ordinance, city officials said.

Question -is the city living up to its original contract with residents paying the one time $50 fee? Are the properties grandfathered to both original fee and ability to make a STR?

“The move comes after the council in September imposed a $50 annual fee on rentals, an increase from a one-time $50 charge, and in May required owners to display their registration number on major listing platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo.”
