Everyone remembers what happened in 2016 — Donald Trump, facing a polling deficit against Hillary Clinton in the weeks leading up to the election, shocked the world by winning Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan on his way to claiming the presidency.

On the surface, Trump finds himself in a similar position this time — the polls almost unanimously against him and a series of controversies around his presidency occupying much of the national conversation.

In 2016 the polls were pretty good at the national popular vote level but failed at the state electoral vote level. Given the huge voter turnout this time, and the passion among voters on both sides, I don't put a lot of faith in them. Like everything else in the Age of Trump, elections aren't "normal" anymore.

All either side can do is vote, and pray, and hope that the Americans that show up at the polls match their vision of America. Whatever the outcome, half of the country is going to be very disappointed.

Keith Gray

The polls and the main stream media in 2016 showed Hilary in a slam dunk... the popular vote was far from a slam dunk, and most of those popular votes came from both east and west coast states... where everyone is invited to the polls.

Bailey Jones

Yes, Keith - that's how the electoral college robs Americans of their voice. It doesn't matter whether the popular vote in a state is 50% + 1, or 99.999% for a candidate, the result is exactly the same. If you're a Republican in California, you might as well stay home - your vote means nothing. And, for the last few elections in Texas, if you're a Democrat your vote is similarly worthless. We'll have to see if that still holds this year. I suspect that it will. I would like state electoral votes to be apportioned based on the popular vote in each state. If 45% of Californians vote for Trump, then he should get 45% of California's electoral votes. If 45% of Texans vote for Biden, he should get 45% of Texas' electoral votes. That way every vote counts. This can be enacted by state legislatures, as it has been done in Maine (since 1972) and Nebraska (since 1992). It makes our republic more democratic.

Carlos Ponce

"If you're a Republican in California, you might as well stay home - your vote means nothing."[angry]

Sorry, Bailey, that has got to be the STUPIDEST thing you have ever written! There's more than just the president on their ballots. Not all California Congressional seats are Democrat. Every Vote Matters. Telling people their vote means nothing is ridiculous.

Gary Miller

The Electoral College results are decided by state popular vote on a winner take all basis. Proportional assignment is and has been tried with mixed results. More often than not poor.

Gary Miller

Bailey> If all conservatives in California voted California would br RED. Too many conservatives don't vote because the Democrat non citizen vote makes it hard to win unless 100% of conservatives turnout. Congressional districts with few non citizens often vote RED.

Keith Gray

Robs the American voter... funny. I think I'm robbed every time someone votes for a bond in the State of Texas who doesn't own property.

Gary Scoggin

I support keeping the electoral college. I think it makes our elections more representative of the entire nation. The change I would make is for states to apportion their electoral votes according to the results in that state. This, obviously, is a decision that each state would individually have to make. (I think Maine and Nebraska already do this.)

Carlos Ponce

"The change I would make is for states to apportion their electoral votes according to the results in that state." That is up to the individual states, Gary Scoggin. Since only a couple have done it and only a handful considered it, it is unlikely more would join that move. To do so on a nationwide level would require a Constitutional Amendment and that is unlikely.

Gary Scoggin

That’s what I meant when I said, “This, obviously, is a decision that each state would individually have to make.“

Jim Forsythe

The National Popular Vote bill will take effect when enacted into law by states possessing 270 electoral votes (a majority of the 538 electoral votes). As of July 2020, it has been enacted into law in 16 jurisdictions possessing 196 electoral votes, including 4 small states (DE, HI, RI, VT), 8 medium-sized states (CO, CT, MD, MA, NJ, NM, OR, WA), 3 big states (CA, IL, NY), and the District of Columbia.

The bill will take effect when enacted by states possessing an additional 74 electoral votes.

Carlos Ponce

Let's see how many Blue states volunteer their Electoral Votes to Donald Trump when he wins the popular vote. I'm willing to bet - NONE.

Gary Scoggin

Carlos.... Are you predicting that Donald Trump wins the popular vote nationwide?

Carlos Ponce

That's for me to know.

Gary Scoggin

Yes, dear.

Charlotte O'rourke

“half of the country is going to be very disappointed.”

True.

Wayne D Holt

I will be truly relieved if the result is just "very disappointed." The way things have been going on the streets of America, that would be a very positive sign for all of us. Let's hope that is the case.

I'm sure the Trumpsters here will jump in with apologia, but this type of thuggery isn't acceptable. It never has been. It never will be - except in Trump's America.

And Trump tweets his unconditional support.

Trump Jr says -"“Hey Laredo, Don Jr. here. I heard you had an awesome turnout for the Trump Train. It’d be great if you guys would all get together, head down to McAllen and give Kamala Harris a nice Trump Train welcome. Get out there, have some fun, enjoy it. "

Let's hope that when Trump loses (or doesn't win quickly) and his rabid followers take to the streets and highways, he will publicly denounce them.

j/k - we know he won't.

Check the demographics of each poll. They do not reflect the voting populace.

Gary Miller

Carlos > So true. Polls for several years say 20% of America is Democrat, 20 % is Republican, 60 % other or independent. Pollsters routine survey 15% or 20% more Democrats than Republicans. Causes their polls to lean Democrat by sometimes large margins. I've never seen a poll that surveyed equal numbers of both parties or that admitted most voters are independments .

Charles Douglas

I'm making plans to see Trump & Pence families members dance at the INAUGURAL Presidential Ball. I like how they dress up in those fancy Tuxedos and Gowns, smiling and floating around the dance floor. All of it ...is so inspiring. I did not know Mike Pence was that skilled on the dance floor MANNN!! Trump too! MAGA!!!!

Gary Miller

MAGA replaced howdy in Texas.

Dan Freeman

Mr. Ponce writes “Check the demographics of each poll. They do not reflect the voting populace.” That is correct and by design. Polls collect data with a variety of methods including telephone and internet. FiveThirtyEight rates more than 450 polls and a scale of A+ to F. Six are rated A+: Marist, Monmouth, ABC/Washington Post, Siena/NYT, Selzer, and Muhlenbert. And ten are banned. All polls weight complex samples to generate estimates that are “representative of the population” and reflect past voting behavior. Examining the demographics of a poll is meaningless. I encourage Mr. Ponce to take a course in political survey, if he is willing to learn. It only requires basic arithmetic and an open mind.

Carlos Ponce

"Examining the demographics of a poll is meaningless." That statement is ridiculous and you know it, Dan!

If anyone has an appetite for some good, down-home, hard-hitting lying, stop by this forum on Wednesday the 4th. My friends it is going to be some expert lying and excuse making going on this forum next Wednesday!

One of my favorite Mayors in Texas had a hit record out years ago called, "THIS IS YOUR NIGHT." Tuesday Night will be the night for America, and Israel! One thing Young David expounded on to GOLAITH, before he defied all odds and KILLED him, really interested me. He said, "This day God will deliver you into my hands....and I will cut you head off and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the field." " That all the earth will know that there is a GOD in Israel."

The LEFT has ignored what has happened time and time again with Trump. They are afraid to admit why they cannot lay a glove on Trump, so they laugh it off ...they poo-poo off what is plain to see! Ahhh but Tuesday night, the whole earth is going to know after the LAND-SLIDE victory Tuesday, that GOD also resides in America, and a message is being sent for all to see. Amen!

Wayne D Holt

With main stream media now breaking the news of the Biden Family peccadilloes, it will be interesting to see how it plays out in real world voting. While most folks going into this election probably were decided long ago on their pick, there will be a million voters between now and Election Day who will get their first glimpse of truth on the sordid tale of Biden--aka The Chairman-- and the blatant corruption that has permeated Biden Inc. for years.

As I have said on other occasions, I consider myself an Independent. Show me a JFK Democrat and I'll empty my wallet to help the campaign. The problem is I have to look past the persona of Donald Trump to evaluate the person better fitted to lead the country...and Trump's persona is an awfully big elephant to ignore. But once you get past it, the smell is infinitely better than what the Biden laptop evidence gives off.

Compared to selling your country out for a buck, as the Clinton's did (see Uranium One and the Clinton Foundation funding pre and post-election) and Chairman Joe with the Chinese and others, there is no question in my mind Trump with his many flaws beats the oily offerings of Chairman Joe and his tribe of cocaine snorting grifters. Taking bribes from some of America's most implacable enemies so you can launder a slice into your dad’s bank account is reprehensible. When your dad knows that but says he still should be the leader of the free world, it becomes a question of national security...and sanity.

Charles Douglas

Mr. Holt! You scared me for a while there sir, but in the end and down the stretch....you bought it home!!!!!! [thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]

Interesting how people are willing to believe emails without metadata found on a laptop computer of unknown provenance “discovered” right before the election. I’m sure Putin is giving his boys a bonus.

Carlos Ponce

Gary, if you are posting about Hunter Biden's laptop the metadata is there, the laptop was the property of Hunter Biden, the emails have been been confirmed by recipients and senders to be authentic and an eyewitness has testified to the FBI concerning the contents. You must be posting about an unreported laptop because this one has been in FBI custody following a subpoena filed in December 2019 and not "discovered" right before the election. What has been recently revealed is the contents of that laptop through cloned hard drives.

Jim Forsythe

One America News Network host Jack Posobiec tweeted Sunday that a source from the Department of Justice told the network that the FBI dropped the investigation due to supposed concerns over the story from the repair shop owner.

On the weekend of Oct. 10, President Trump’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, his former adviser Stephen K. Bannon and a prominent new ally, a Chinese billionaire and Mar-a-Lago member named Guo Wengui, gathered at Mr. Guo’s luxury apartment overlooking Central Park for dinner and cigars.

That weekend, Mr. Giuliani had delivered to The New York Post a copy of a hard drive purported to be from a laptop belonging to Hunter Biden, the son of Mr. Trump’s Democratic opponent, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. The hard drive was filled with what the men claimed was compromising material about the younger Biden that they hoped would sully his father’s reputation.

It was the latest in an often-bumbling series of attacks that began two years ago with the goal of undercutting Mr. Biden as a threat to Mr. Trump’s re-election by linking him to the messy personal and business affairs of his son.

When you look at forecasts like 538.com, it’s important to remember you are looking at probabilities, not predictions. When Nate Silver gave Hillary Clinton a 70% chance of winning, he was correct. She also had a 30% chance of not winning. Which happened. If a weather forecast gives an 80% chance of rain, and it doesn’t rain, was the forecast wrong? No. What it does mean is that of 100 similar days, you can expect rain on eighty of them.

Gary Miller

The evidence, not a poll, I find likely to be accurate is what is happening in blue states/cities. Business owners are boarding up expecting riots if Biden losses. Another is police in blue cities are retiring/resigning and looking for law enforcement jobs in RED cities in case Biden wins. Last but not lease is reports of 31+ % of black support for Trump. 4 times of his 2016 Black support. Or that over half of Latinos support Trump now compared to 20% in 2016.

Charles Douglas

Big Wilt Chamberlain said many years ago that "MILLER TIME" was the "RIGHT TIME." I will tell everybody what is the right TIME! Tuesday the world is going to hear the LOUD voices of African-Americans, Latinos, Hispanic, and Young Americans rang out against the Radical Left, from around this nation, sending TRUMP back to complete the Job he has started in putting America First!

No longer will Allies like Germany, France, and other European Union nations be allowed to freeload off the American Taxpayers while they cozy up to CHINA, IRAN, & RUSSIA! No longer will we tolerate a Prsident who will go on a world tour denergrating America, and Americans to the world like we are on trial for wrong doing! Yes Tuesday night will be something to see!

The LEFT has being lying with a passion for four years on TRUMP, hoping to get him out as President, but could not! Now they hope to do what was constitutionally provided for them to do in order to get him out and they will fail at that too! What would this country come to with a RACIST, senile former Dixicrat loving, dude who sold this nation out with China, Russia, and Iran, partnering with a California Liberal, who wants to open up our borders, take our guns, shutdown our fossil fuel jobs, cancel our Blue Cross, Aetna, and any other private Insurances, ban the use of straws, and outlaw my lawnmower?

It will not happen, so we can stop covering up for that RACIST who does not know his wife from his sister, who say his son is the smartest man he knows! Lolo. That does not speak well of Obama does it, if Hunter is smarter than him? The man is shot! The LEFT hopes to do an end around the process and kick Joe 10% out and elevate Kamala Harris if Joe 10% wins! The thing is Kamala is SHOT TOO! She could not manage her own campaign ..now she is supposed to manage the best, most prosperous country on the face of the planet? Come on man!

We hold these truths to be ...ahhh....ahhhh...Dat Thang.....!!!!! Call Joe 33030330..ahhh yeah. Ahhh Black kids need to listen more to ahhh you know ahhh the record player...ahhh.... IS THIS THE BEST THE LEFT CAN COME UP WITH?

So the word is out that he has not paid any taxes for 10 years. Let him prove he has paid taxes, because he has not." Mitt Romney 2012

Dallas Morning News:"We won’t recommend a candidate for president in 2020 and here’s why"

But they do recommend Republican John Cornyn for US Senate.

U.S. House 3rd District, Van Taylor - Republican

U.S. House 4th District, Pat Fallon - Republican

U.S. House 12th District, Kay Granger - Republican

U.S. House 24th District, Beth Van Duyne - Republican

U.S. House 26th District, Michael Burgess - Republican

Numerous other candidates, Ds and Rs

Why not endorse a presidential candidate? They claim they want to endorse ideas not individuals but their endorsement of down ballot candidates contradicts this.

Why not? Perhaps the idea of someone torching their building and sending newspaper vending machines afire crossed their mind should they endorse Trump.

GCDN did not endorse anyone. A wiser move????

Jim Forsythe

Carlos asked "Why not endorse a presidential candidate?" The Dallas Morning News answered the question below. It believes that we are all adults and can make up our own minds. They said they would explore issues by giving you the information you needed to make up your mind. Its rationale is that the more thoughtful, voter-empowering approach will quell the rise of political personality cults, overheated extremes — and contempt.

The Dallas Morning News - 02/17/2020, “From the start, this nation was always an idea, a concept about liberty ... that invited a perpetual debate about how society should be,” the newspaper noted. Now the nation is “at a crossroads.” It can “pivot into a bright future or fall into an abyss.”

There’s currently a “broad push to drive our politics to extremes, to destroy without building consensus for what should be built,” the newspaper warned. Political debates are being driven by “assessments of political personalities” and “populist passions on the left and right,” it added. The result is distracted voters who empower a candidate without ever “seriously debating policy implications.”

The Morning News explained. It will explore such issues as taxation, economic policy and immigration.

It will also speak up for “individual liberty, the rule of law and alliances with like-minded democracies,” the editorial noted. “We believe that society must arc toward justice, compassion and responsibility.”

The election is “larger” than Donald Trump, the message emphasized. “What’s at stake in 2020 is the basic art of democracy” — and a turning away from the “crisis of contempt.”

“We stand ... with Abraham Lincoln, who reminded us in his second inaugural address” ... that ‘we should proceed with “malice toward none, with charity toward all,”’” the paper stated.

The editorial concluded: “We’ll start that conversation on civility ... by framing and supporting ideas rather than a candidate for president ... We hope it will empower you, the voter. For our fate resides in your hands.”

Carlos Ponce

Just rhetoric from DMN regurgitated by Jim who is quoting from Liberal Huffington. They endorsed all offices except that of the president. Some would say their editorial board could not reach a consensus. They don't have to. They can do what the GDN once did and have each editor endorse their candidate of choice and pen their name to each segment.

Others are saying the DMN is afraid of offending any readers by endorsing one candidate over another which may lead to cancellation of subscriptions. POPPYCOCK! They endorsed every office on the Dallas area ballot.

I still go with my earlier thought the DMN is afraid that a Trump endorsement would bring out the violence from Liberals that city has seen previously.

But as the "Dallas Observer" notes: " It’s clear from their editorials published soon afterward that the paper [Dallas Morning News] intends to use its editorial voice to campaign hard for Trump. They just won’t admit it."

https://www.dallasobserver.com/news/morning-news-afraid-to-name-their-2020-pick-11875583

As the Dallas Obserer writes, “Can we just not say his name?”

What good is Freedom of the press when editors cower in fear behind their presses?

Jim Forsythe

Since you are upset with the The Dallas Morning News, call them and say you want your money back.

If you read the reason they posted, they did not want to recommend Trump." The election is “larger” than Donald Trump, the message emphasized. “What’s at stake in 2020 is the basic art of democracy” — and a turning away from the “crisis of contempt.”

The Dallas Morning News is in a Republican area, and it they had recommend Biden , they would have lost customers.

Do you Carlos, change your mind because of a paper recommending a candidate? If GDN had recommend Biden, would you have voted Biden?

Most if not all have decided if the are going to vote Biden or Trump.

The winner should be know in a few days, unless one of them, Trump or Biden wants to protest the vote. Trump has said that he will.

Carlos Ponce

It's clear from their editorial they prefer Trump but will not name him. It's sad when they kowtow to puerile interests out of fear. Freedom of the Press is foreign to those interests.

Bailey Jones

For a comprehensive list of press endorsements, see here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_media_endorsements_in_the_2020_United_States_presidential_election

Jim Forsythe

Thanks Bailey, it is interesting that no Texas newspapers were on the list in favor of Trump.

If endorsements are that important, Biden will win because he has the most.

I do not know about you, but I do not vote for a candidate because a paper tells me to do so.

Most adults can think for themselves.

Carlos Ponce

"If endorsements are that important, Biden will win because he has the most."

In 2016, Trump had hardly any newspaper endorsements. Hillary had much more.

Bailey Jones

Endorsements are a fun diversion from election angst -

It's nice to see so many people I like on Biden's side, and so many people I don't like on Trump's.

Jim Forsythe

That's the point, endorsements are not that important!

Why would someone worry about endorsements ?

Why would a newspaper endorse a person they do not believe in?

Why would a newspaper endorse a person that calls news, fake news?

Carlos Ponce

A newspaper endorsement clarifies if the editorial staff is in tune with their readership or not.

Jim Forsythe

Why would a newspaper endorse anyone, if neither are what they are for? The Dallas Morning News endorsed Clinton in 2016.

"There’s currently a “broad push to drive our politics to extremes, to destroy without building consensus for what should be built,” the newspaper warned. Political debates are being driven by “assessments of political personalities” and “populist passions on the left and right,” it added. The result is distracted voters who empower a candidate without ever “seriously debating policy implications.”

Look at who they endorsed om 2016:

After saying it would not endorse Donald Trump in this year's election, the Dallas Morning News editorial board went one step further on Wednesday, backing the Democratic presidential nominee for the first time in more than 75 years.

If they had endorsed Biden this time would that have made you happy,

Carlos, if you do not get it, the Dallas Morning News does not like Trump.

Dallas Morning News poll shows Biden leading Trump in Texas

The October poll shows that Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a major political problem. Forty-four percent of Texans said they have no confidence in Trump’s ability to keep the public safe from the virus, up from 32 percent who said so last month.

The Morning News, does not like what Trump stands for. Every Newspaper has a right to endorse the person they think is best. Even with not being able to endorse Bided, they refused to endorse Trump. The non endorsement says it all, loud and clear!

“But unlike Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton has experience in actual governance, a record of service and a willingness to delve into real policy,” the editorial continued.

The newspaper’s formal endorsement of the former secretary of state comes a day after it published an editorial saying it would not back Trump in 2016, ending a streak of endorsing every Republican presidential nominee since 1968.

In an editorial published Tuesday titled “Donald Trump is no Republican,” the paper’s editors rebuked the GOP hopeful, advising Texas voters that Trump is “not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote.”

They argued that Trump “inexplicably” won the primary despite being “the one who thumbed his nose at conservative orthodoxy altogether. Trump is — or has been — at odds with nearly every GOP ideal that this newspaper holds dear,” they wrote. “Donald Trump is no Republican and certainly no conservative.”

The Morning News, cited Trump’s “authoritarian streak that should horrify limited-government advocates” and his “open admiration of Russia’s Vladimir Putin” as “alarming” reasons to oppose his candidacy. They also criticized the real estate mogul’s economic policies, saying that “his protectionism would likely force the U.S. into trade wars, increase the deficit, and sink the U.S. economy back into a recession.”

“Hillary Clinton has spent years in the trenches doing the hard work needed to prepare herself to lead our nation,” it continued. “In this race, at this time, she deserves your vote.”

Carlos Ponce

2016?, Riiiiiiight.

Considering their endorsement of ideas in 2020 that reflect Trump's ideology, it looks like they have changed their minds, Jim. But you won't go there.[rolleyes]

No, they still did not endorsed Donald Trump. He is the first Republican they had not endorsed in more than 75 years.

Carlos Ponce

Jim, that was 4 years ago and Trump still won. That has more to do with the DMN Editorial Board than Trump since all the reasons given in that 2016 op-ed were nothing more than Democrat talking points.

Jim Forsythe

The Morning News, does not like what Trump stands for. Every Newspaper has a right to endorse the person they think is best. If the two caudates are not what they consider worthy of their endorsement , they will endorse no one.

Even with not being able to endorse Bided, they refused to endorse Trump. The non endorsement says it all, loud and clear, we do not like you, Trump

Just because The Morning News endorsed Republicans for more then 75 years does not mean that would Trump was automatically get a endorsement from the the Morning News.

When a candidate keeps telling the press that they are fake, they can not expect a endorsement from the press.

Carlos Ponce

"Even with not being able to endorse Bided, they refused to endorse Trump." At the signpost up ahead ..... Jim has entered "THE STUPID ZONE!"

Jim Forsythe

Did they endorse Trump? Does it matter. The answers to both is no.
