The Gulf Coast Homeless Coalition on Jan. 24 completed its Point in Time count of homeless people in Galveston and Brazoria counties, providing a numerical measure of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness in the area, according to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines.

That count, however, doesn’t adequately define how many homeless people live here and need services to get out of their current circumstances, many experts agree.

A single snapshot out of context isn't all that informative. Is this more or less than last year? It's higher - but we don't know by how much because no one knows the count last year? Is there a trend over the past decade? It's a count of the homeless, but doesn't really tell us how many homeless there are? Bad data is worse than no data. Then HUD takes this bad data and then breaks it down in to hundreds of categories to determine how to allocate resources? This all sounds not very useful - a bureaucratic exercise rather than a determined effort to actually help address homelessness.

300 Children!!! BOI's where are you!!! I realize that the parents play a role in ensuring that their kids are fed, sheltered, and well taken care of, but when the ball drops where's the village? Now what does this article tell you about Galveston? NOTHING IN PLACE TO SERVE AS A MEANS OF SURVIVAL FOR THOSE NEEDING TEMPORARY- AND I STRESS "TEMPORARY" ASSISTANCE!!!!! Again, the Housing Authority should have rebuilt the housing communities immediately after IKE!

These are a few of the places.

The Galveston Island Family Crisis Center, is the only homeless family shelter in Galveston County. Annually, it provides shelter services for more than 700 homeless parents and their children.

At any given time, more than three-quarters of the clients are children ranging from 0-17 years of age.

The Case Managers support clients in developing personal, home and community living skills, as well as educational, parenting and vocational areas that increase their successful transition into independent living.
