Residents at Holland House complained Tuesday that one elevator in the four-story, 157-unit complex hasn’t worked for several months and a second elevator works only sporadically, causing many elderly and disabled people who live there to climb stairs if they leave their apartments or, in some cases, to hunker down and stay put because they are afraid or unable to use the stairs.

“They say they don’t know when it will be fixed,” said Sandra Suchanek, 76, who lives in a fourth-floor apartment of the public housing complex.

I wonder if the elevator at City Hall would be out of service with only excuses for this period of time? Would UTMB or American National be able to repair failed elevators with some small sense of urgency? No doubt the illustrious members of the GHA plan to rush over to Holland House and help these poor people escape if a fire breaks out...

Shame on GHA, City Council, Mayor and City Manager.
